Just saw this on the news - a Metro North train derailed on the Hudson line (Poughkeepsie to GCT); four people dead and many injuries.

I'm ok. I am up at my inlaws and just saw it on the news. So far I haven't heard from anyone.

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The Metro-North train that derailed in the Bronx was traveling 82 mph as it approached a 30 mph zone in an area that the governor has called a “dangerous” curve, the NTSB announced Monday afternoon.

“When I heard about the speed, I gulped,” U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said at a news conference with the National Transportation Safety Board. It’s “scary” and raises “so many questions” about the deadly derailment in Spuyten Duyvil that killed four people and injured 53 others at 7:20 a.m. Sunday morning.

“My breath was taken … It’s harrowing,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal about the moment he learned the train was going at triple the speed limit.

The investigation is looking at human error and/or mechanical problem with train or signal, but speed was clearly a factor either way.

It seems certain that the tracks were in good shape and not at fault, according to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.

About five seconds before the engine came to a stop, pressure in the brake pipe dropped from 120 psi to 0, which resulted in maximum braking, the NTSB said.

The engineer cell phone has been recovered and will be inspected; the engineer is speaking with investigators. Drug and alcohol tests have been conducted on him, but the results have not been completed.

Schumer said the Metro-North train made nine stops before derailing. “The brakes weren’t long-term not working.”

The trains cars and locomotives will be moved in the next few days, helping the MTA to prepare the tracks to return to service. Metro-North Hudson line service is presently suspended between Grand Central Terminal and Yonkers.

Turns out one of the deceased was friends in high school with a car-club friend. It was weird... when I saw the name in the list, I was thinking, 'damn... that looks familiar...' as apparently she had mentioned her during conversation.

I think I heard in another report that the train conductor was experiencing unexpected intestinal distress.
Seems he may have unknowingly eaten some Sugar Free Gummi Bears.
The origin of the "mystery bears" still being researched.

Thanks for checking in Wally! One report I read today said this was the first fatality of a passenger on the Metro North railroad. I sure hope they determine this was a freak accident due to faulty equipment - and not operator error.

Dang, 4 people dead. That totally sucks in every way, but I could have anticipated that being a lot higher. Glad it's not.
