Ok we live in an older home with stucco ceilings. We had some water damage in our master bedroom. I was able to patch the ceiling and match the pattern but the patched area is a brighter white than the surrounding area. Does anyone have an idea of how to dull down the patched area or am I stuck painting the whole ceiling?

might be painting... it was probably bright white at one time.. but years of dirt, grime, and smoke and turned it dull and nasty

I usually paint the whole ceiling, but you could try painting the patched area to match the rest.

An off-white flat spray paint, so the edges will feather?

My brother is a contractor and swears by this for patches, water stains you name it on textured or 'popcorn' ceilings. Disclaimer: never done it myself.

Get one of those Kilz cans that sprays up. Keep it about 18 to 24" from the ceiling, kind of 'ghost' it on the spot, go past the edges of the patch a bit. Don't spray a heavy coat; Kilz is semi gloss and will make a shiny spot that's easily seen if you use it the way the can says. Let that dry for a few hours, then do it again. He says it may take three very light coats but the patched area will blend right in.

Curmudgeon did a better job of describing it than I did, but I do that all the time.

If it doesn't work, paint the ceiling. No loss.

Thanks guys. I just checked the Kilz web site and it states "Tinted to match most aged and acoustical ceilings". So I guess I'm making another trip to Home Depot.
