Paul Reubens died today at 70 from complications with prostate cancer.
Big, big part of my childhood. Might have to go watch the old movies with the little one this week.

In November 2002, while filming David LaChapelle's video for Elton John's "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore", Reubens learned that police were at his home with a search warrant, acting on a tip from a witness in the pornography case against actor Jeffrey Jones,[74] finding among over 70,000 items of kitsch memorabilia, two grainy videotapes, and dozens of photographs that the city attorney's office characterized as a collection of child pornography.[1] Kelly Bush, Reubens's personal representative at the time, said the description of the items was inaccurate and claimed the objects were "Rob Lowe's sex videotape, and a few 30- to 100-year-old kitsch collectible images."[75]

Weird. A singular charge filed, but nothing past a charge being filed, guilty or innocent. Ah, charge dropped for an obscenity charge. So...?
Not that I put it past anyone in Hollywood, at all, but this was far below the jerking it at a porno theater charge that he was known and joked about for.
I was at The Alamo last Thursday and thought of that basement bit. I forgot about all that movie theater stuff and I didn't know about the child porn stuff.
In reply to Stampie :
I'd assume if he was actually found with child porn it would have been a big story. He might have been an odd duck, but I'd be surprised at child porn.
For those that didn't live it, it was a big story.
I don't know if I was just the wrong age, or if he just wasn't someone I had any interest in watching, but I can't think of anything I've seen him do that sticks in my memory.
RIP. I certainly won't judge the man. That's between him and God.
his shtick was definitely odd and sometimes funny. regarding the child p0rn, specifically the "rob lowe secks tape", lowe was 24 when he hooked up (and videotaped) a threesome in Atlanta GA with 2 young ladies, ages 22 and 16. At the time, age of consent for knockin' boots in GA was 14, but age of consent for filming it was 18. (source: wikipedia)

Him getting caught in a porn theater was a big story, but that had nothing to do with child porn. There are plenty of people that watched that Rob Lowe tape, or a tape with Traci Lords in it (she was found to be 17 when filming) that could technically be charged with having child porn. To me there is a big difference between that and what the Ferris Bueller Principal had in his house

You are correct, sir. I had very much forgotten the details, but yes, it was a case of him handling the package in public.
I worked with him on thr Big Circus just for a day but it was the first day and he was one of the coolest directors I've ever worked for.
In reply to Steve_Jones :
And I'd be willing to bet it was the Ferris Bueller guy trying to give up bigger name to escape prosecution.
I remember watching Pee Wee's Big Adventure in the theater (different theater), and It was the first time that I ever considered walking out on a movie. I was just about to leave when Large Marge drove up.
Holy E36 M3, I'm glad I sat back down. I laughed my ass off from that point forward.
RIP, Paul Reubens. You were a very funny guy. Truly one of a kind.
It is time for the world to reevaluate the movie Mystery Men and see the genius in it. Paul's "the Spleen" was amazing.
Also his vampire henchman character in the movie version of Buffy the vampire slayer was fantastic. I almost fell over when he reprised it for an episode of "what we do in the shadows"
In reply to Trent :
Man, I've been thinking about that movie hard for a while now. Must be streaming somewhere...
Peewee was silly fun. Not anything to write home about, but memorable and quotable, and that ain't bad.
RIP. Nobody is perfect, but the guy made a lot of folks smile.
In reply to Trent :
As a comics fan, and particularly alternative comics, I really really wanted to like Mystery Men.
But instead of an affectionate sendup of the odd side of superheroes, I just found it juvenile and mean-spirited.

Interesting. I know exactly how you feel because you just described my feeling on "Portlandia" but in the case of Mystery Men, probably due to my growing antipathy of the superhero genre, I feel like it was a skewering that is more necessary now than ever.
The movie definitely has its flaws, mostly due to a terrible director (seriously, who thought the Taco Bell Chihuahua commercial guy was a good choice) but the source material, excellent casting and a distinctive visual style help save it.
This is supposedly Pee-wee Herman's final public appearance ... as a radio disc jockey. I listened to it. Pee-wee sounded like he had a blast for his last hurrah.
