Boy am I glad the cops weren't that harsh at Rock the Bells in Detroit a couple years back.

Nearly 200 law enforcement officers worked the weekend event, with the Vermont-based band picking up the tab.

I thought Phish loved their stoner fans

200? That's a lot of LEOs that could have been on the look out for actual criminals and not mere civil disobedients. Vermont tax monies well spent.

One thing is for sure the COPS loved the Phish phans. Apparently all they had to do is walk up with a bag of Cheetos and the perps were done for.

i wonder if it would be good to call the holding area the "phish tank"

I thought it said the extra police was paid for by the Band not tax payers... unless Phish is getting a cut of the stimulus package, and now my brain hurts

Likely the band was REQUIRED to pay for the officers as part of the contract to play there. I do casual part time security work in Virginia, unarmed, fairly simple stuff which mainly consists of customer service. At the NIN concert, I had to tell a guy that #1, he was in a roped off area, and #2, there was no smoking in the arena. He was stupid enough to tell me "but it's not a cigarette, man." I told him to shut up, put it out, drop it in the trash can and go back to his seat.

Geez... I actually went a Phish concert once. I think I was the only person there who wasn't high. Only reason I went was because two gals had tickets but no car, and offered to cover all my expenses if I drove them. I figured the concert had to be worth the admission price I was getting... it wasn't.

F'in ridiculous. All that money goin to waste.

Drug war is a joke.

Legalize it all. Tax it. Stop sending money to drug lords in Mexico and other parts of South America. Prohibition never works.

Sounds like my Grateful Dead experience.

The Dead were REALLY, REALLY boring if you're sober.

Gotta disagree with you there Baxter. I saw the Dead a few times while sober (and a few more while not sober) and they kicked ass at all but one show.

Keep in mind they used to play nearly 300 shows a year, so occasionally they had an off night. Maybe you got them on one of those nights.

The only time I was disappointed at a Dead show was at Soldier Field in 1994 (I think). They didn't suck, but they were kinda just going through the motions. It was still a fun time though, and yes, I was sober.

They usually were a great show, if you liked their style of music.

Never did get into Phish...reminds me of a great bumpersticker:

Jerry's Dead

Phish Sucks

Get a Job

Somebody gave me a Grateful Dead CD once. I got about 4 songs into it, ejected it and never stuck it in the player again. Boooorrriiinggg. I was told that's because I am a Type A personality (remember all that mumbo jumbo?).

I really like the Dead. I think it might have something to do with the fact that my dad took my mom to a concert when she was 5 months pregnant with me. That also would explain a lot of other things

While the cops were busting the criminals, someones house was being burglarized. Priorities, people.

I do think busting stoners is a waste. They tend not to go anywhere, are not violent and consume. Exactly what the media wants us to do anyway.

I couldnt even read all of this. It pisses me off no end when government uses the threat of deadly force to liderate legal tender from individuals when they have no proof that those funds came from illegal actions. Just think if you were going to buy a car with cash and were pulled over and had your money taken by police. Now you cant buy your challenge project, you must hire a lawyer to retrive your money only to turn most or all over to said lawyer. Like I said pisses me off.

Phish vs the Dead? I'm gonna go with Phish there. Sorry to all the older crowd, but I've been more impressed with their musical abilities. I'm basing this on recordings, not from hazy concert memories.

As for cracking down on pot at concerts - sheesh. Just make sure everyone gets home safe, that's a better use of effort.

Just as an aside, as far as Jerry Garcia goes, his best stuff was his bluegrass stuff with David Grisman.

I'll second that. However, I do like the Dead, too.

I tend more towards punk than jam. Songs shouldn't last more than 5 minutes at most. 3 is ideal.

Five minutes. Sheesh. That's not punk.

At college in 1993, my roommate John worked at the Nutter Center, a new arena/concert hall (he washed jockstraps for the basketball team-really). Some losers came in the back door one evening. This was the conversation:

Losers: "Dude, where's the fish show?" John: "Do you mean the Gun & Knife show?" Losers: "No, man, the fish show!" John: "Are you talking about pets?" Losers: "No, man, Phish!"

After a few minutes of this, my idiot roommate finally figured out what the stoners were talking about. They thought Hara Arena was the same as the Nutter Center.
