100% a HOF'r. A complicated man but his play puts him there for me.

Charlie Hustle.  An amazing ballplayer who made a mistake.  It's remarkable to me that the people who steadfastly refused his reinstatement are perfect human beings.

Now he'll get in. It was a lifetime ban. Seeing as how that's over...

I understand why he was banned, but he should have been in a long time ago.

As a Reds fan, I was pretty devastated when he was found out to gamble on my team, while coach.  He was such a driver of the Big Red Machine, and was a pretty good coach, too.  He should be in the HOF.

At the time the ban was the right call.  Today, with all of sports embracing betting - including company names on jerseys as part of sponsorship deals - that's a bit rich.

Growing up in Cincinnati in the '70s my mom was all about the Big Red Machine.  I played along, dad was not a sports guy.  He bet on baseball, he knew it was wrong, he did it anyway. But with organized legal betting on sports today, meh.

right now he can't get in.  He has been banned from baseball and the HOF has a rule that says anybody who is banned from baseball can't get in.  So unless his ban from baseball is lifted he won't get into the HOF.

I agree that the HOF could make a gesture by removing the lifetime ban and that would enable those people that vote to have that conversation in pubically...  I also think they could admit Pete Rose the player but deny Pete Rose the coach but first MLB probably has to remove his ban from baseball.

He was a natural heel, and could take one hell of a chokeslam. Edit: oh this was the year he took a tombstone

Here's the chokeslam

I know it's not what he was really known for but I actually just watched this again last week and felt it fitting, since he actually wound up in the WWE HoF.

My daughter lives an hour out of Cincinnati.

She doesn't have a clue who Pete Rose was.

(like when we'd mention Moose Cholak and people in Chicago had no clue)

My son loved baseball, and base running. He was the best base runner in the league by a long shot.

He was self-taught.  Spent a lot of time watching old footage of Pete Rose and Ty Cobb.

You know, I'm probably in the minority that believes Pete Rose shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame - mainly because if he's in, I feel other great players caught betting on their games should be in, too.

However, I found a solution that would honor his achievements as a player, posed by Bob Costas:

"Put him in the Hall of Fame. Put it at the bottom of his plaque, 'Banned from baseball in 1989 for life' as part of the record."

Bob Costas Has Suggestion For Pete Rose's Hall Of Fame Plaque (msn.com)

I feel that's more than fair.

I do think he should be in the Hall based on his accomplishments, but the bottom line is that it's his own fault he isn't. And I don't even mean the gambling. I mean the decades that followed, where he was an unapologetic, unrepentant shiny happy person. If he'd copped to what he did, maybe done some anti-gambling PSAs, they probably would have lifted the ban. But he just wasn't wired that way.

IMO, this is a great summary of his life.

I wouldn't go that far, but, yes, there are definitely some ballplayers with less than pure backgrounds. Some of guys from the early days were pretty rough characters. Their stories do make for interesting reads, though.

In reply to J.A. Ackley :

Shoeless Joe Jackson: "Ty Cobb wanted to play, but none of us could stand the son-of-a-bitch when we were alive, so we told him to stick it!"

I actually worked with Pete Roses daughter (first marriage) at bit.  By appearances it was not surprising at all she was his daughter! I remember she did mention something about her dad at some point, and it was to the effect of "he's crazy" (and no, I don't think she meant it literally)

One of the subscription networks has a doc on him that is pretty enlightening.  Crazy impressive player, but man, he certainly has his own view (and memory) on things!

Other than Joe Jackson and Pete Rose, which ones that have been banned would be even qualified to be in the HOF?  I get your point, but I don't think it opens a big group of people.

There are plenty of players who are not banned by baseball, but the writers who vote will never vote them in- Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire to name a few.

And Bonds holds a pretty significant record, like Rose does.  Not likely to get in anytime soon even if he's not banned.

this is why I think the hall could remove the ban.  Once the ban is lifted he isn't in, but it allows the conversation to happen in the public forum.  Let writers make the case for/against, in the down time that is baseball offseason between now and winter meetings let all of the writers duke it out on substack, AM radio, and the like... Should make for some interesting baseball talk.
