This thing is surely 20 years old. I use it a bit, and nothing it does is mission critical, but it's getting a bit streaky and I've done nothing to it other than put the odd toner cartridge in it. Is there any cleaning to be done, or am I more likely to berkeley it up if I try some hamfisted cleaning?

Depends on how it's streaking. Could be the drum, or could be rollers. Drums are easy to berk up from my understanding.
PC load letter?

Sorry, I have nothing else to add. I maintain my printers with a baseball bat.
It likely needs a drum; is there a consumables report you can run? Usually that will show you what's worn.

Lol! I've been out of that game a decade, but yeah it's either the drum is scored from wear, the fuser roller is scored from wear, or possibly, if your really lucky, the corona wire is dirty.
I don't remember the specifics of that model, but some of them have a knob/tab inside the front cover that you can slide in/out to clean the corona wire. I doubt that will fix it, but it's worth a shot.
Oh, and if you need parts https://www.precisionroller.com usually has a decent selection for older models like yours.
