So I got the powder coating setup and had to coat stuff (yes, it comes off your hootus much easier than spray foam). Powder coating is supposed to be much more durable than paint and I realized my sons Hotwheels cars are all chipped to death because he actually plays with them. What better test bed!?!?
Sorry, no before picture, but it's a silver car Crossfire. I chose that car because the body has LOTS of detail and I wanted to see how much detail I'd lose from the coat.

So, I drilled the smashed metal-rivet type thing to get the thing apart.

Once apart I stripped the paint off.

Then I coated it with what will be gloss black.

Then I baked it at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. After just 10 minutes it was cool to the touch and looked pretty dang good.

Here's the finished product. Looks much, much better than the cars I used to brush paint as a 12-year old.

Outstanding!!

The best part about powder coating is the clean up. Spray the gun down with an air hose and you are done. No smelly cleaners, no mess, and no worry about getting rid of used thinner.

I see that those pic don't show the detail of the finished product. I hope this is better.

Do they just rivet back together? Maybe thats a stupid question. Never took one apart.

I think Hot Wheels customizers generally use small screws to reassemble.

Also, damn fine job on the rebuild DrBoost! If you want to really finish it off, paint the headlights and taillights again (mail it to me if you can't ).

Thanks Jav. I was going to do the head and tail lights on the car when I did the color change. I decided to stop being so anal-retentive and just shoot it and see since I was just trying to see how well it worked out. My son has over 100 cars (you should know ) and I'm going to start gathering up his chipped cars to coat them.
I was impressed with how it came out. I did a very heavy coat on that car and lost very, very little detail. I'm eager to see how it holds up to being bashed around like the other cars.
