We are remodeling our upstairs (the downstairs got remodled in 2008 when we did the roof and siding)
In the bedrooms we decided to replace the carpet, when we pulled up the old carpet we found hardwood floors. I guess the 70's was a weird time as it was popular to cover hardwood with carpet, go figure.
the floor had paint dripped all over it, and a water stain. I spent all Sunday refinishing it with Isopropal alcohol and then a new top coat.
Before (with paint splattered all over it, Thanks previous owner for the paint splatter)
And after a full day of refinishing and a new top coat (I let it dry over night before the picture)
I love how it darkened up a little bit. I will use the same top coat on the trim around the windows and for the trim that goes back in around the wall.
I checked the other two upstairs bedroom and yup, they have hardwood too. I am super excited.
Beautiful! Nice score Just think if they hadn't covered up those floors 40 years ago, they would be all scratched up by now
Looks good! What did you use to finish it? The after pic is almost exactly the same color as my floors, and they need to be refinished.

I used "Bona"
http://www.mybonahome.com/Home.aspx
Specifically the Polish. I didn't use the cleaner (as it is mostly Isopropal Alcohol, or rubbing alcohol). But the polish is a nice, easy to spread. They say to use it every 2-3 months, but twice a year is fine.
That looks great! Nice job.
How bad were the tack strip holes all around the perimeter?
Wow. Did you have to sand any of it down? How did you get the stains out?
Wow. That looks incredible. Lucky!

Not terrible, I used Perdy (its a wood putty) and then just and sanded them.

The bed covers the stain so I didn't do anything for it :)
I only sanded the edges where the tack strip use to be.
we bought a 1950 ranch house in 1987 and it had yellow mustard shag carpeting. we ripped it out, filled all the carpet tack holes, did a light sanding and refinished them. we were thrilled.
If I ever find that guy who layed the carpet and cut the razor across the wood everywhere though................

Very nice!
I had to chisel up 50 year old linoleum, then crowbar up miles of plywood subfloor to expose the 100-year old pine, which of course had about 8 coats of paint on it. Bitch to sand, but worth it.
I want hardwood floors so bad. I like them and the kid has allergies. Someday soon... I tried my hand at sanding and refinishing hardwood floors just once. I was screwing it up so bad that I quit and called in a pro. He walks in, looks at my handiwork and says (under his breath but I could still hear it) 'I can fix this'.
I'll stick with cars.

Sand with 80 grit, fill lows, block with 80, 400, prime, block, paint?
Great looking floor!! Pulling carpet back and finding hardwood is almost as good as hitting the lottery.
When we bought our house in the late 80s it was all carpet that was well worn. Before we moved in we stripped the carpet to replace it and found the same thing you did. The entire house was oak including the bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen and bath were too far gone (rotted) to save, but the rest of the house turned out awesome. It was a lot of work, but worth it. Too bad after 20+ years and four kids (including the hot plate that landed upside down in the living room while on) it needs to be done again.
