Thanks to all of you. I think I'm going to reply to him and say I don't accept Paypal for something like this and that he'll have to find a way to get me cash. He lives far enough away that I think it's unreasonable to expect him to pick it up in person, but that's his problem I guess.

You really ought to consider the wire transfer oprion. Paypal would cost yo almost $300 and him nothing. A wire transfer would cost you each $15-20 and it is quite safe for you.
Cash. Distance is his problem.
It's off. I emailed him, told him what I required, and he wrote back "well then I guess you can't sell me the car." I'm okay with that.
