If your local walmart still sells guns, they will have the lowest price. The other in my area is Dicks. It will also depend on what models they have, as the base model starts at $200 and the nicer ones (Stainless, synth. stocks, other improvments) will start to get exspensive. I would be suprised if the $350 model at Gander is the basic carbine.

Maybe I lucked out on the price on mine, just keep looking.

Meh, the 10/22 is more akin to a Fox Mustang, average in stock form, but with an aftermarket big enough to do anything (if you got the cash).

I recommend a Savage MK II, they are bolt guns and to me are more enjoyable when target shooting because of it. They are much more accurate than the 10/22 and i think they are built better. Mine does under a 1/2 inch at 50yds easy and will do around one inch at 100yds WITH NO WIND and match target ammo. That's really good for a gun that costs $345.

I'd go for a pistol caliber lever gun. I'd settle for a .22 lever gun, but only if I got to wear a poncho & hat & smoke a cigar when I shoot it.

Tons of fun. I have a stainless steel Marlin .44 mag lever gun and I absolutely love it. But since .44 mag/.44 special ammo is so expensive I now have a stainless steel Marlin .357 mag on the way so I can shoot cheap .38 specials.

Soon to be a collectors item. H&K sued for infringement and part of the settlement was that ATI wouldn't import anymore into the US. Still allowed to sell whats in inventory, but once they're gone, they're gone. Kind of bummed, I wanted one. ATI was also rumored to be bringing in a 9mm version, not sure of the status on that now.... Back on topic: a 10/22 is on my list........

Guess I better get a regular SD while I can (I got the Anniversary edition in the titanium finish). Wonder if HK is going after all the airsoft guys as well.

On a side note another vote for the 10/22 here. I have one but want another for building up. There is also a tube fed .44 mag carbine that is visually identical to the 10/22 however I don't think they make them anymore. In fact the only one I have seen is my own.

I enjoyed learning and the practice entailed with my old Remington Targetmaster. Reliable, cheap, lower ammo waste through bolt action.

Unless planning on defense/killing... I don't feel a gun needs to be anything more than a single shot. Take your time, pick your shots... practice... enjoy.

I take it you've never fired full auto, then.

I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of precision shooting - I've shot formal matches at ranges from 50 feet to 1000 yards - but I can understand the fun of shooting quickly.

I went to a local Wally-world to pick up a 10/22 tonight and still don't have one.
I got there at 8:45PM. They have a sign saying that gun sales are from 8AM to 10PM.

The "camo-crew" got there before me and took 20 minutes and 3 tries to fill out the paperwork to buy a $200 shotgun. I waited in the immediate area and was obviously looking at the guns. By obviously, I mean leaning over the counter and looking at the tags.

It was finally my turn at 9:07 and I asked about the 10/22 and the clerk said they have another model too but it was out of stock. Then he said it was too late to buy a gun. I asked about the 10PM cutoff and he said they don't sell after 9 because of the paperwork...paperwork that I just saw takes 20 minutes for 3 rednecks to hunt-n-peck their way through 3 times.

The clerk helpfully suggested that I could come back by first thing in the morning. That is also what the member of management suggested when I saw her at the doors. She had just finished walking the camo-crew out with their shotgun. She had also been at the counter twice while I was waiting.

Neither the clerk nor the manager asked if they could help me while I waited.

I didn't know about the 10PM cutoff before I went but I was there 1 1/4 hours before the limit and then I get told "not tonight" a full 45 minutes before the cutoff. I hate Walmart.

I've already sent a complaint to the store but I had enough bile left to come and whine to you lucky folks.

BTW, I saw a Mossberg pump while I waited. I was gonna buy that too. That store lost out on a $434 sale tonight. I let them know that in my complaint too...not that I'll ever hear anything back.

I had a Winchester 9422 that had an ejector problem right out of the box. I was really looking forward to that rifle (had been a Christmas present when I was a kid). Ended up taking it back they could not figure out what was going on so swapped it for something else can't remember what right now.

Oh I do have a model 94 now though its a .32 Winchester special made in the 60's. Much more solid than the new rifles.

rmarkc, you did the right thing by complaining about that store. Make sure you email and/or complain on the wally world site. They really do listen and act on those complaints. I have seen complaints and compliments go straight to a V.P. at the supplier, for example.

Unfortunately, sometimes when you want the rock bottom price, there's a little customer service you're giving up. I hope you find your 1022, as they are fun little plinkers.

I'd like a lever action Winchester in 22 also, but I think I have enough. Too bad Winchester shut down. Guess Mrs. Winchester's ghosts finally won.

I am going to be the dissenter here and vote against the 10/22.

Yeah, yeah, I know they're the .22lr semi, but I don't like them. They're too expensive, and they're bloody difficult to operate, compared to many others. What's with that stupid bolt hold? No free floated barrel? And the price! Often downright outrageous. (Nevermind my otherwise intense hatred of all things Sturm & Ruger Co.)

I (along with a whole slew of people I know) chose the Remington 597 as the .22lr semi alternative. It's cheaper, free floated barrel, and you can get them at Dick's Sporting Goods all day long! (No supporting the MAIG-lovin' Wal-Mart.)

I also kind of like the Mossberg Plinkster, it seems like a good firearm, and it's cheap as all get out.

597 remington isn't a bad gun. Last one I shot was a Dale Jr edition, boy was that thing available dirt cheap. Like I mean cheap.. They were under $80 from remington on scratch and dent(I was an employee then)...

2 more suggestions.

1. Marlin Model 60. It's got a tube mag, but they're great little guns

2. Any old Anschutz model from the 1960-1970's. These guys are cheaper than they should be and shoot only like the germans can...

Dr. Hess: I did find a 10/22 at another Walmart this morning and a Maverick 88. Both were $10 cheaper too.

I walked out of there with:
-10/22 w/poly stock $237
-Maverick 88 12Ga $177
-550 rounds of Federal .22LR $15.47
-25 rounds of Remington 12Ga $5.97
-2 shirts and 2 pair of jeans

for a grand total of $506.58...and a much better customer service experience.

The paperwork did take about an hour to complete but that was on the old paper system. This store didn't even have the computer system yet.

I do have one little pang of buyer's remorse. I should have gotten the carbine model not the poly stock model. The poly stock feels cheap and hollow and costs ~$30 more. That $30 coulda been put towards an aftermarket stock.

My only 10/22 regret was not getting a stainless one, but it was not available in the model I wanted. I forget what it was called but it has a long barrel and checked walnut stock.

But they're cheap enough to start over with another one.

Volquartsen makes nice stuff for them.

I have NO regrets on my 10/22, aside from not drilling the hole for the sling mount farther forward (on a carbine). I had hit the butt plate screw.

So far I have 4 mods done; a rubber "recoil absorbing" butt pad that makes the stock 1" longer, an apature rear site, a poly bolt buffer/bushing/stop, and a sling mount.
