Dr. Charles Perry and his students at Middle Tennessee State University have developed a retrofit kit that allows ordinary gasoline vehicles to be transformed into a plug-in hybrid. They saw gas mileage increase between 50-100%. Talking with potential investors is underway and should cost between $3000 to $5000 in the retail market.

For $3K or so I'd hafta consider this, not even expecting a full return on investment... just to do it. As I've spent countless thousands on modifying vehicles over the years this might be one of the coolest mod by far.

Hmmm... Driving a Miata, it doesn't make sense, but driving a lot of other cars, that 3K would be recouped in... Not that long at all. Of course, that is making a bunch of assumptions (battery prices are reasonable with a long life; gas prices stay high/go higher relative to batteries, etc). 5K might be a bigger issue though, but even at 5K you could make an argument for it if you're in a Suburban.

and I did the GRM search too, oh well
nevermind
Wheel hub motors - hooray unsprung weight! But it is a tidy solution. I like that they used an Accord wagon to test, I love those wagons.
I'd have visions of a VW Rabbit or Caddy PU veggie diesel w/ this kit.
