my vote goes to Doro, what sayeth the peanut gallery?
One that gets my award for "most surprised to find she's the lead singer of a heavy metal band": Jada Pinket Smith.
Sorry dudes, I gotta go with Wata from Boris. She plays a Les Paul that probably weighs more than she does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2uyJCizNmI

Generally not a big fan of the whole "Numetal" / faux NY hardcore sound, but I really like this tune, and am a little bit in love with this chick:

Sean Yseult gets my vote:
Five and half feet of bass banging metal chick. Pretty much the shorter version of my high school girlfriend minus the musical ability.

Pretty... care to tell us who the hell she is?

Flyleaf is pretty damn solid for what likes to pass as "music" in some of those subgenres.
I have to admit I'm "out of the loop" on music since about 1995. I found Halestorm almost by (a happy) accident. Woman of metal? I automatically go to Lita Ford, Vixen and ...my mind went blank. A friend gave me a burned CD of a group called Sleigh Belles? Still trying to figure what category they fall into.
Mallika Sundaramurthy.

Aww E36 M3.
Normal voice too. I was fully expecting her to sound like a man all the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGbc5rTRZO4
I don't mind Halestorm... in small doses...
As kick-ass female guitarists go, Orianthi is pretty damn good, although not really metal.

berkeley yeah. I saw them in their prime. Hair swinging like berkeleying crazy. Don't know how I forgot about her.
In reply to Jerry:
I can dig some Sleigh Bells. I wouldn't call them metal, though. Alternative maybe, but not metal.
As far as "chicks in music," Aimee Argote is my be all end all. Some of Des Ark's stuff borders on metal. This does not, but goddamn I am in love. True story: I tried to sell her a van a few months ago and creeped her out. Turns out she's not a big fan of dead hooker jokes. Wasn't meant to be.

If we are stretching the meaning of metal to include Halestorm and Flyleaf, then you can't leave out Emma from Sick Puppies.

+1 Except I never had a HS girlfriend, let alone this one.
Sadly singer Laura Carter is no longer with us, but BBQ Killers, the band she fronted, regularly played in Athens when I moved there.
It's not metal, but it's not boring.

PS: Sadly the Uptown Lounge is gone, too. Saw many sweaty shows there.

We saw her playing with Alice Cooper when they (he?) opened for Maiden last year. She can definitely shred. Metal need not be dominated by white guys.
