Whichever kind it was, the box just barely fit lying flat, but it did completely fit.

also, if you take the rear seat out and throw it in the dumpster at the building material supplier, you can fit an entire small kitchen's worth of cabinets in a 99 p71 with a rear cage if you don't mind the trunk being up and tied shut.

Had one of these back in the day. I will add that they will also hold 4 dudes and all their gear on a trip from Umass to Key Largo for spring break SCUBA diving.

The trunk of a 87 Town Car will hold a 1/2 sheet of plywood. With the lid shut.

A 99 Chevy Venture will carry 2 complete GM 4200 I6 engines and get better fuel economy than is does empty.

A focus hatch can fit a washer, dryer and water heater , one at a time of course, and close the hatch. But, you couldn't put 8 foot lumber in and close the hatch. It won't quite reach even from dash to back, and it will Crack your windshield if you think it might shut.
A Volvo 940 wagon does not fit 2 adults, 2 kids, and everything you need to take with you on vacation, therefore--minivan!
Mazda MPV swallows quite a few 8' 2x4's--they slide right up between the seats. I'm pretty sure I've had some 10-foot lengths of PVC pipe in there and still got the hatch closed, but as I recall they were resting on the dashboard.

A 1984 Suburban will hold 20 sheets of 4x8 1/2" plwood inside with room to slide forward and backwards at stops.
A 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara (NOT the XL-7) will hold 2 adults, 3 suitcases, one large dog crate (together), 2 large dogs, dog food for a week, water, cooler and pillows INSIDE, and a 3'x3'x2' square coffee table in a bag on the luggage rack.
It will also carry 10 8' yard timbers inside with the door closed if you lay them on the dash.
A S-series wagon is exactly long enough to carry 10' long pipe if you go from the passenger footwell to the upper corner of the rear hatch.
Speaking of practical dimensions... one "new" (ish) car feature I like is the square recesses in trunks/cargo areas for holding gallon milk containers. A lot better than it sliding all over the trunk.
A 1st Gen scion xb, with the rear seats folded down can hold 240 sq ft of granite counter top.
