So with the cost of lumber going insane right now, I was wondering about alternatives for building my new shop/garage. A friend is building a 40x80 shop with five doors and it is not much more then what I was quoted for a 20x40 with one door.
How do metal building hold up? How hard are they to insulate and add heat and A/C to? Any other things I should know about?
I can't offer much practical experience since mine isn't up yet but I am in the process of doing a 30x50x16 down here in Florida.
There's going to be two roll ups(12x14 and 10x10) two walkins, two windows and basic roll insulation. The building is about 20k, the install, 10k, the concrete roughly 10-12k.
Site work, plumbing, electrical interior finishes I imagine will vary greatly depending on your situation.

Any special hoops to jump through with FL codes?

How are you finishing out the inside? Do you install wood and drywall? I have a good idea on what site work and electrical will cost unless there is going to be a major price difference between going electrical in a metal building and a traditional one. Just worried about how it lasts and how well it insulates as mine is going to include a gym and I would rather not cook in the summer and freeze in the winter.
Right now the inside is just going to be unfinished workspace. I am planning on a roughly 10-12 by 16-20 inside area with a mini split or window rattler for bench type work when / cooling down and for storage above. That will just be framed out with drywall or wood sheathing.
Stampie - No surprises so far. I am Volusia county so much more lienent in terms of size and appearance standards than some of the city/town requirements I've heard about.
Been almost 20 years, but Dad found it cheaper to buy an old house and move it to his property then adapt it to his needs rather than build something.
More recently, shipping containers seem to be the cheaper option, although I don't have any numbers handy on insulating them and whatnot.
I am talking to Miracle Truss about the cost of their buildings and wanted some opinions on a letting light in.
They had a picture of a building done like this.

I am assuming this would perform much worse thermally then a regular window. Like below.
