For some reason people have to argue about which is better instead of buying the berkeleying thing.
So, P71 or Miata?
I'm an avid gamer. I have owned LITERALLY every major console dating back to the Atari 2600. Sega, Nintendo, all of it. This is the first time in an EXTREMELY long time I'm not all bent over getting a release day system. I've not gotten them on release day many other times (Last one was the 3DS) but this generation does nothing for me. WiiU is actually in the lead, it has games I want to play. Miyamoto is a genius and I love the mario stuff. Forza 5 isn't enough to get me moving, PS4 had NOTHING I wanted at RD. Battlefield? COD? PASS. Not to mention Xbone wanting to creep all on me and read my heart rate and crap.
I don't get the hatred and "wars" over any technological thing. Computers, phones, video games...they're all going to have features that appeal to some people more than others.
I don't really play a lot of the older stuff anymore, so I went ahead and sold off most of my PS3 and 360 stuff to fund an Xbone, figuring that if I had no interest in it, I can sell it off and get my money back, easy.
I'm having fun with it, but I wouldn't say its world changing or anything. I got Forza and NFS Rivals, and am looking forward to my GT6 preorder when it releases. Then I'll be stocked with console racing goodness for the next year or two.
Oh, and the Kinect isn't required now to play Xbone. So if you don't want a machine monitoring your dangly bits, you can disconnect it and let it sit in your dresser drawer like I have.
In reply to mndsm:
its not just you.
even though both systems moved nearly 1 million units their sale day, i don't think that has anything to do with a sudden new demand.
I think it has more to do with MS and Sony fixing their manufacturing/supply chain issues that plagued them for the ps3 and 360. the ps3 moved 600,000 on its launch, and there's just no way your going to convince me that the gamer marketplace in '''home''' consoles has almost doubled in 7 years. Its more likely is been close to this size the whole time.
I certainly don't see anything 'special' in new systems in the way of a generation of computing power that justifies a new platform. these systems are more like the difference from the game cube to the wii (which was basically a memory upgrade and an overclock)
And honestly, I got my hands on an Xbone in a M$ store yesterday. It was on some bleeding edge TV, so you know it was cranking out pixels as hard as M$ could make it. It was running Forza. It was pretty....but it hasn't been the evolutionary leap that we've seen with previous generations. It's come to the point now that they're basically making PCs with controllers, and they need the displays to keep up, which MOST people don't have as TV's. It'll be some years before 4k gaming is a reality, instead of just feasible. It'll be another 5 before I replace any of my TV's, for sure.
oh, neither of these will game in 4k television resolutions.
they can output at that rez, but neither has the processing power to sustain a 30fps rate at that rez.
but what STILL blows my mind is that the ps4 wont play cds. helloooo? didn't you co-invent the format? Are you completely abandoning the idea of a home media entertainment box? but you still want $400 for the system?

sadly, they took the pic down....

I'm surprised Sony let it play Blu Rays. I mean, they bludgeoned the market hard enough that Blu Ray won the war- it's time they drop it, right? Anyone remember MiniDisc? SACD? Sony has a habit of format hopping.
In reply to mndsm:
MiniDisc was huge for a long time in Asia and Australia, etc. It just never caught on in the States. SACD was kind of like Blu-Ray vs. DVD; most people don't have the hardware to notice the difference. Plus rotational media is becoming old hat (that I still cling to because I'm a bit of a Luddite)

Kinext has head tracking for Forza so that is the way I am going..... Eventually.
I am just happy that the PS3's are so cheap now that I can grab one and all the exclusives I missed. That should keep me going for about a year or so.
In reply to wearymicrobe:
Admittedly, it is kinda cool and works well for head tracking, but right now my coffee table that serves as our entertainment center doesn't really have a place for the Kinect.
I think SWMBO is getting me the clip on TV mount for the Kinect, so we can eventually use it for the ubiquitous party game and Skype chat that we sometimes use.

This is the other part. I'm SO horrendously backlogged from going multi-system so early in the process, It'd take me a year of playing 12 hours a day to catch up.

Seriously? No CDs?
I was hoping the PS4 could replace my PS3/HTPC, then I could build the computer for iRacing.
Although I can't remember the last time I listened to a CD not in my car, it's not the point.
The PS4 came out a week earlier for $100 less, it won from the beginning. Not to mention all the DRM controversy with the xbox.
In reply to z31maniac:
PS4 won't play MP3's out of the box, either, and I think there's other issues like that as well. Neither the XB1 or the PS4 seem like an HTPC replacement at all. They do streaming content somewhat and that's it.

They probably saved $1 in cost per unit by leaving out the laser that's the right color for reading audio CDs.
Seriously, though. Who uses CDs? I haven't bought music on physical media in 5 years, and that was after several years of buying CDs, immediately ripping them, and then shoving them in a box in the closet and never looking at them again.
In reply to codrus:
I buy all kinds of music on CD's and rip them. There's a lot of stuff that isn't available for download and the costs are usually a lot lower that way if you can find an album with some songs you like (if there's just one or two tracks then this doesn't work) if you buy used.
Codrus: I've bought 4 used CDs in the last months, as my most recent automotive mistake came with a CD player.
(AC/DC, AC/DC, Cake, Macklemore)
But other than that, yeah.
I was dead set on buying a new TV and XBone until about a week ago.
(I'm quite enamored with the Forza franchise, PS doesn't have anything compelling)
Then I remembered how much more mileage (heh) I could get out of that money by dumping it into the Nova.
Bonus points: Way easier to pick up chicks in the Nova.

and this, my friends, is what its all about. they both want the revenue stream of you 'renting' game services and content services. Its just that MS has more experience doing it.
microsoft has been trying to make this happen with windows and everything else since the early 2000s.
why go to the expense of packaging a product when they can cut out all those costs by selling you a 'service?'
welcome to the new face of console gaming...
In reply to mndsm:
oh, the 1st gen PS3s play SACDs.
and the ps3 also recognises the Minidisc format of data, which is ATRAC (a lossy mp3 competitor) ;p

That issue was debunked long ago......you are paying more for the Xbox, but it does come with the kinnect. Also, less expensive versions of the Xbox one are coming soon.
