Last minute idea, but I will be moving into a new place tomorrow, have a perfect balcony to setup a pulley system to move stuff up instead of trekking the narrow stairs. I'm not talking about the heavy furniture, but the massive amounts of totes and boxes.

Anyone have any suggestions or layouts they would want to help out with? I don't have the best moving crew. In-laws, prego wife, desk job physique brother, and hopefully his 18 year old nephew who is full of gumption and energy.

Bad idea, liability much?

take it up the stairs. you'll waste far more time screwing around getting a dangerous pulley system working, and when it inevitably collapses, dropping a box full of priceless china on your prego wife, you'll become an internet meme.

Yeah this is asking for disaster. I've helped a good few people move and exotic moving options are very rarely useful.

How about a couple more people, and one person on each landing?

I think I saw this in a Laurel and Hardy film once.

I'd do it. But then again I wouldn't be moving into a 4th floor apartment in a building without an elevator. I'm fat for a reason.

Run down to the hardware and pick up a block and tackle set and a couple of hundred feet on line. That's what I use to lift stuff to the attic above my shop. Nothing heavy, just stuff I don't want to carry up the ladder. Not to mention it's probably safer than carrying it up the ladder.

I've done it a dozen times, and you don't need a pulley. A lengthof 1/4 inch rope, slip knot on the end, make two loops so the box is contained on all 4 sides, then tie a knot every 18 inches or so to give you grip. Hand over hand and it works a treat. Don't try to lift a 12x12 box of LP records, or anything heavier than that. Obviously, don't let anybody stand underneath the load.

screw that, you need a winch and a car battery.

Rent. Zoom boom or a scissor lift. About $200 for a half day.

Moving tomorrow? Not really enough time to properly set up a pulley system. I'd just trek it up the stairs. Maybe use the pulley system to assist pulling the loads up the stairs but still involves set up time that could be better utilized trekking boxes up the stairs. Now if you were moving next weekend, might have enough time to set up a winch system.

Haven't you seen all the obviously staged Eastern Block videos on America's Funniest Home Videos?

I prefer to use the levitation device from the local Rent-All, if that were rented out I'd offer free beer to the neighborhood kids.

Be sure to video this, if it the system has a massive fail, at least the $50K from the TV show might cover some of the medical bills.

Just use those forearm straps and helpers for the heavy stuff and take the damned stairs. Next time don't move into a 4th floor apartment without an elevator, who are you? Sheldon and Leonard? :)

Our condo at the beach was on the 4rd floor, so I brought a rope, heavy gloves and a large carabiner. I could throw the rope over to the parking lot, and someone would clip the carabiner to the handles of a bag or luggage, and I would haul it up. Same process in reverse when leaving.

It took more upper-body strength, but saved 50 trips up and down 4 flights of stairs.
