I just had to replace a 60 watt incandescent bulb in the den. Fixture is a closed globe. We have oodles of CFL and LED bulbs, but they are all labeled "not for use in enclosed fixtures". What gives? They don't emit anywhere near as much heat as the 60 watt bulb does.

I'd guess the PSU is full of cheap parts that will quickly crap out in the increased heat.

The problem is while CFL and LED bulbs don't emit as much heat as an incandescent bulb, they need to be in free air in order to properly dissipate the heat they do create, otherwise the internal drivers will die an early death to due overheating. Incandescent bulbs don't care as much.

you would be surprised how much heat an LED can put out. It is also a combination of LED and it's assorted circuitry to turn the 120v AC into something it can use.

I've put CFLs in enclosed fixtures without much trouble. But they don't get turned on for that long. Cree makes a bulb that is rated for enclosed fixtures, I got them at Home Depot.
