OMG, I’m literally watching Empire Strikes Back right now!
I sent a screenshot of the OP to SWMBO as I'm not a StarWars guy and she has a baby Yoda tattoo. She nearly instantly had this, and another link, at the ready as if she had been waiting for the question.
Apparently it explains it and there were memory wipes of Luke and CP3
I've never seen any of the films, so I'm unable to confirm, but I trust her on this.

Yoda & R2D2 did remember each other. They knew that Luke needed to be challenged. R2D2 & Yoda also knew that Vader was his father..

I’d rather read HP and am a much bigger HP fan than SW, but Star Wars is definitely the better viewing experience

It's been suggested that R2 and threepio's memories were wiped somewhere between eps 3 and 4. No idea if that's considered canon or not, but it does explain stuff like that.

C3PO's memory wipe is right in the ep3 script. No mention of R2D2 but R2 was part of the Republic/Rebellion from the beginning and C3PO belonged to and was built by Anakin/Darth.
Also, I don't think anyone can really understand the beep-boop-beep E36 M3. They're just polite because R2 doubles as a smoker.
