Lets say you have a folder with 500 pictures, taken with a couple of different cameras/phone.
I want to rename them all so that I can better organize them. Lets say name them IMG001 through IMG500.
Is there are simple way of highlighting all the files and just press a magic button that will do that for me?
Bonus points if the naming can be done according to the date they were taken, older pictures with a lower number or viceversa.

Depends on your OS, but yes. Some windows versions will allow you to it. steps:
1) highlight them all
2) right click on the first one
3) select 'rename' from the drop down menu
4) rename.
That should rename all of them in many versions of windoze.
Thats great news! I am using Vista.
Thanks!

Now you are overestimating me ... I barely know how to turn on the computer, lol.
There are free file renaming tools out there. Joey's tip will work though, it just adds (1), (2) to the end. Not real pretty, but it does work.
Flash renamer is free and I might ad amazingly fast and easy to use.
I do it in Adobe Lightroom or Bridge or Photoshop, so I am sure you can find a PC program that can do the same. Check your photo-editing software for a batch rename feature.
There is a utility called Bulk Rename Utility. It works well. I've used it quite a bit over the years.
Here it is - Bulk Rename Utility.
Thanks guys. I tried JoeyM's suggestion and it worked ... I am not sure why it starts with (2) instead of (1) but at least now they all have the same name.
I will try Flash Rename and Bulk Rename later with a few other pictures I have.
