as my dad slowly died in that hospital room, from kools and vicerorys he had lasped into a coma, but still kept going through the motion of taking one out of his shirt pocket putting it in his mouth and lighting it.........it was a sad thing to witness.

It is worth it. Stay with it.

If you search for some of the other "I Quit" threads, Dr Hess had a really good post describing what is actually happening in your brain. He wrote it well enough that even a Georgia public school kid could understand it.

I know for me, knowing why I am irritable has a profound effect on my mood.

Not to pimp out the good Dr, but it might even be worth a PM to him. It was interesting the effect nicotine has on brain receptors and how when they say it is harder than heroin they aren't just whistling dixie.

March 15th of 2002 I quit. I was 1.5 pack a day'er. Still have cravings. I understand those never fully go away. I've saved almost $13k dollars by not smoking these last 8 and a hlaf years.

Put dryer sheets in the cars and let them sit in the sunlight. The heat will make the dryer sheets heat up and give off that clean clothes smell while the sheet itself traps all the smokey smell. Do this for a month and it'll be 10000% better.

Gathering supplies for the long, hard road. I'm down to less than a pack a day, not smoking in the car (where I spend at least 90 minutes a day,) and no smoking inside (THANKS FOR THE ADVICE, SVREX!) Ordering the "e-smoke" thing this week to see if that helps, and grabbing nicotine gum stuff.

I've also cut back on the drinks which helps immensely with the smokes.

I used Zyban when I quit, and it was like magic (I know, I tried to quit many times). Even if you have to pay full price for it, it's worth every penny.

Interesting. Is that one of those welbutrin-type-gigs? Mind if I ask what full-price is?

It was the first of the anti-depressants to be used to quit smoking. The side effects are VERY light, and for me consisted of minor sleep difficulties (I would wake up 4-5 times a night, but go right back to sleep), and really weird dreams. That part I actually enjoyed.

No idea what full price is, it was covered in my insurance plan.

Even my wife who was a heavy smoker, and really wasn't all that committed to quitting was able to quit on Zyban. When I say it was like magic, I'm not kidding. I know how difficult it is to quit. I tried so many times.

I set my date 2 weeks ahead (April 6) like the instructions said. A week in, the smokes started tasting lousy, like I'd smoked way too many in a row, so I started smoking less. April 1st 2001, I was at work, and only having 1 per hour. At 9 AM, I wanted to see if I could make it all the way to noon without having one. That 9AM smoke was my last one.

I did a search, and it looks like you can get it from Canada online for about $1.50/pill

CONGRATS to all who have quit - whether years ago or yesterday.

I also lost my dad to emphysema in 1998 (at 68), not to mention the severe stroke in 1980 (at only 50 years old) that we think was at least partially caused by years of smoking. He would have been 80 on Thursday.

Anyone who still smokes, please consider quitting, for your family if not for yourself.

keep up the good fight! I basically kept reminding myself about how much better I, my clothes, my car, and everything I own would SMELL without the smoke. After a few weeks, I essentially brainwashed myself about it. Now when I see someone smoking, I literally think about how terrible they must smell and it kinda sickens me. I was a 10 year smoker, and it will be 2 years in March that I quit, and I havent had a single smoke. I dream about it from time to time tho. But I honestly dont even crave them anymore. Keep it up man, you can do it!!!!

My mother-in-law quit about 6 years ago after 30+ years of smoking. Interestingly she found that drinking coffee triggered her nicotine cravings. So she quit coffee too. She looks a lot healthier these days.

I expect that to happen, and ironically, I ended up drinking more coffee after I quit.

It replaced the cigarette after dinner, etc.

Yup! Glad you brought it back to mind; chuckling now, with my wife wondering about me. And I'm gonna look for it on PHC's website...oh, yeah, it's good!

About the cravings never completely going away: no, they don't, and sometimes it's miserable. But it's STILL 70-odd cigarettes per day for the last 36 years that I haven't smoked. And Lord only knows how much money hasn't been spent...I haven't kept up on prices, so I've no real idea how much. But it's really worth it when you can look a kid in the eye and tell him you know more than you ever wanted to about how hard it is to quit smoking.

Wow

I know what you mean. The last day I spent with my dad was Christmas Day 2009. He was nearly done by then, but he kept lighting Winstons one after another. Hell of a thing to see. They were killing him yet they were all he could think of.

I quit about 25 years ago, I was a three pack a day smoker at the time. The best advice I got was to keep conquering those goddamn things one at a time. After a while, it becomes habit to push them away, just as it was habit to light them up before.

I doubt you'll find it on their website; they only have Lake Wobegon's going back to 1997. If you want it, PM me your email address and I'll figure out a way to send it to you.

Hang in there and be tough. It's been 30+ years-I quit when a pack of smokes were 50 cents and so was gas/gallon- and I still get an urge once in a great while. Remember how you coughed and choked with your first inhale? That was your body telling you something. I had to change my whole routine when I quit, and tried to not be in the situation where I would normally fire up. That helped. A lot! Take it one day at a time and good luck.

If you lived in N.Y., it would be about $4500 a year!

Feel free to set me on fire, but does anyone else think that it is very "Unamerican" for the gov't to force a company to fund advertising that tells consumers to NOT buy their product?

If someone has to tell you that inhaling smoke directly into your lungs may or may not be bad for you, I have no use for you. That piece of knowledge should be obvious.

By the way I'm a current 2 pack a day smoker for the last 15 years.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, just voicing my thoughts.

While I certainly support your right to make your own decisions, and do not typically have any objection to someone voicing their opinion in a non-threatening way, I do not necessarily think your post helps the OP or the topic of this thread. Perhaps this post needed to be made in its own thread. Some could consider it trolling, even though it was not particularly derogatory. You seem to only be trying to stir the pot as it were.

You mean while they make billions of tax dollars on the same product?

Never mind.
