Subie fans, this one will be painful to watch:

There's two with the idiot driver racing down the path. Those "Tread Lightly" guys really don't need idiots like this about.
Yeah, guys out there tearing up the trails are what give mindful offroaders a bad name and play a big part getting rid of these trails completely. I'm lucky that I'm not far from a decent trail system. Well, decent for Florida. Many idiots like this and these trails wouldn't exist at all.
As a former trail system 'manager' (for lack of a better term) I've dealt with similar problems.
The one thing I did learn: the Forest Service is NOT OHV friendly. The land managers will seize on incidents like this and use them as justification to close trails. That's not because they want to 'protect' anything, it's because it lessens their workload. Yeah, I'm the SOB who said that.
Wait what the hell was going on there? How did it get up there? Why did they chose to drag it over the roughest patch possible to get it out?

I think the reasoning was it was only two miles to the exit, but 10 to the entrance. Besides, they didn't care about the car's shape, the owner had abandoned it.
In reply to DoctorBlade:
Ah-makes more sense that way. I assumed the guy driving owned the car. He sounded like the perfect kind of idiot to get his car up there.
I can think of a better way to get it out there... generator (or PTO) several sawzalls, and a couple of pickups to throw the trash into the back off.

Yeah, me too. As an avid off-roader it's pricks like that (subie, Jeep or truck, doesn't matter) that give us a bad name
Was the car in gear? it looked like he was dragging the front tires
I think they were dragging the brakes to keep the tow line tight.
I guess no one figured out they could just pull the e-brake up a few clicks.
My question is "Why did they let the owner in the drivers seat while they were recovering the car?" He obviously had no idea of how to drive in those conditions and couldn't even follow their directions.
^ unfortunately not often enough. i dont see anything "painful" just a broken appliance being removed.
(Ived owned 2 subies)

That's EXACTLY what I said as soon as I saw the side skirt get torn off by a rock.
Must've been a pants-E36 M3ting experience to run into a big pile of rocks at 100+.

Exactly. We lost quite a few good trails since I was a kid over stupid E36 M3 like this.
May '11, an Explorer w/ four jerkwads drove off a 300' cliff at midnight. 7+ hour rescue w/ 70 rescue personnel from 3 counties, stokes baskets, quads, mules and 4 Medevac Choppers. Those kids were lucky the cell phone had reception or they probably wouldn't be found till hunting season.

That must have been ugly.... but like you said, could have been worse.
I will admit, I used to "bomb" the fireroads around here. Smooth dirt, fwd, and not a lot of power OR grip led to some nice drifted corners. Not sure I would do that anymore, thankfully never had any incidents though.
And now there's in-car video of this jackwagon's asshattery (NSFW language):

Just to clarify something: the owner ABANDONED the Subaru after he destroyed his oil pan. The guy in the recovery video was a part of the recovery crew, not the Subaru's owner.
From what I can see the problem started when he got the car stuck where he couldnt get it out and left it there. Im not sure I see that much of a problem with anything that happened before that, but who knows.
