Have you tried "Shaker" style stacking?  More wood per square foot.  (I do coal, less moving product).

I have not tried that. I know the style as the German "Holz Hausen." Same principle. Very time consuming I would think. But beautiful. If I built one I wouldn't want to dismantle it!
