Wrong city--that being Baltimore, but "Homicide: Life on the Street" which ran from 1993-99 was often praised for being a gritty and realistic portrayal of city cops, their work, and the city in which they work. Great television, some crossover with "Law and Order," and Richard Belzer as John Munch. Generally underachieving in ratings because of its Friday night time slot while praised by critics, it is, IMO, the very epitome of "gritty drama."
