You haven't really experienced late stage capitalism until you have 16 voicemails from an amped up dude (who you have never seen but you can instantly tell he is wearing a Hurley T shirt and wrap around sunglasses) ranging from "you better call me back" and escalating to "I'm calling the cops" and "I have your address and a glock, give me my money" for a debt from someone who died 6 years previously.

I had that happen once. This was before glocks were the go to gat for wanabe thugs. I invited him over to get the cash, Once he was on the property, I explained that the hospital was never getting paid (similar prob. as op) and proceded to show him the importance of being polite at all times, cause ya never know who's on the other end. To the best of my knowledge, he found a safer line of work afterwards.

FWIW medical debt seems to go away faster and be less of an issue.  Before I bailed out of NJ there was a huge billing snafu with the local medical conglomerate.  After multiple attempts to correct it I went with the "pound sand" direction although maybe not in that polite of a phrasing.  My high 700s credit rating dropped into the 600s.  Meh, I wasnt planning on buying a car or house and had cash on hand for everything else so I let it ride.

Took the jump to move and was really worried I'd never be able to buy a house with that hanging over me especially since I still had a house payment in NJ.   Bought the house at sub 2% rates, bought a tractor a 0% a month later, basically medical debt was ignored by all creditors.  Credit rating is a 811 today, just about 5 years after the first dispute.

My parents had a debt collector that wouldn't believe that my mom wasn't the person they were trying to collect from, called a bunch of times and was an shiny happy person about it.

I backtracked the phone number and called the owner of the agency at home. This was awhile back and I think the owner wasn't super internet savvy because it seemed to impress them enough to never call again.
