So my wife and I just got back from vacation and have decided to move to TN. I know the job market is not great, however my wife works from home and will keep her salary that she is making in NJ which will go further in TN if I can not find something quickly.
We are planning on going down this October to look around and want to find a real estate agent to set up houses that we can go see. Anyone know of a good agent? We have been contacted by Berkshire Hathaway, any info on them?
If we like it we will be putting our house on the market and set up the move. If we do not like it we will begin to look at other areas, either in TN or other states, most likely NC.

If you don't like Chattanooga, you can check out Knoxville and Nashville. Most folks there like it. NC is nice. I'm just across the border.

The major difference between NC and Tn is the tax structure. Tn has no income tax and uses mainly the sales tax to finance government. Most local governments use the property tax for income. There is little governmental regulation or interference in the smaller counties. NC has income tax and has the reputation for much greater levels of governmental regulation ie wheel taxes, licensing taxes, etc. NC also enforces its speed limits whereas in Tn, it is much more of a suggestion than a limit. YMMV
Chattanooga is a surprising city and has really reformed itself in the last 15 yrs or so. Growing up, Chattanooga was not a place to visit but now we are down there on monthly basis. Knoxville is dominated by UT so be a sports fan and develop a tolerance for orange in your clothing. Nashville is incredible but getting more like Atlanta in traffic and congestion.
Everything we have read has peaked our interest in the Chattanooga area, plus we have friends that are about an hour away in Georgia. No income tax and limited government regulation are a huge plus in my book. Not to mention lack of emissions testing in certain counties (engine swap anyone?). It is going to be a huge change from NJ and I can't wait.
Years ago a lot of people that lived in TN moved across the border into NW GA to take advantage of the "free" college tuition. I'm not sure that is still available, but I love how people want free E36 M3 without paying any taxes.
