I was poking around the internetz, looking for aftermarket intake manifolds for my old Impala and it hit me. Everything on this bad boy has a cool name!
No, really! I was looking for an Offenhauser intake manifold that'd hold three Rochester carburetors. (say it out loud: "raw-chest-ter", "Off-en-how-zer") add that to the fact that this Impala sports a three-speed Saginaw transmission and I was entertained for a bit longer than my pride will allow me to admit.
(I'd just like to say that agian: "Saginaw")
ok, that's all.
I think Chief Pontiac was a Saginaw Indian. Out of business after an unsuccessful siege on Fort Detroit... huh.

I guess you would like the engine in my BIL's 1940 Ford.
Offenhauser Heads
Edelbrock Manifold
Stromberg 97 carbs
On a 1953 Mercury Flathead

Most cool old parts are named after cities in the Michigan/Indiana/Ohio area. The rest are named after the people.
Saginaw (okay, the transmissions were weak, as were the steering boxes, but the pumps are good)
Rochester
Muncie
Cleveland
Lima
Still looking for Toploader, IN, as well as Torqueflite, MI.
Ford's practice of naming parts after where they came from is why certain Mk1 Capri bits have odd US-specific names. Ask for "Dagenham" transmission parts on the world market and you'll get confused looks.
Aw man, I forgot about "Muncie"! That's another cool one
I actually had no idea where they were getting their names from, naming them after cities makes sense.
I travel those states and say them out loud in my car to entertain myself.
Pontiac. Cleveland. Windsor. Delphi. Muncie. Saginaw. Cadillac.
Windsor's not in a state, despite most Windsorites claiming that Journey is singing about our city when they say "born and raised in South Detroit". We do still make some sweet V8s though. And minivans!
Certainly much better than a string of numbers and letters.
