Recommend a new wireless router

I need a new wireless router for the house.

Any recomemdations?

On the recommendation of my tech department (Gimp) I just did a mesh network.  Tp-link deco 5 from amazon for $179(comes with 3 units).  I went from no wifi in basement to full bars and hit/miss in the shop to full bars.  I put one at the cable modem like my old router was, one at the back corner of the house closest to the shop and one in the front corner of the shop closest to the one in the house.  Very happy with it

We have a Nighthawk RAX75.  Works well but kinda wish I would have went the mesh network just to help extend the coverage.  We have 4 boys that are gamers so good wifi is essential.

Ubiquity POE AP. Good power and can be placed on the ceiling in the middle of the house easily

I also have a pretty small house, I'd take a step up if I had to cover more area.

I don't have a large enough space to justify a mesh, yet.

I replaced my trusty Ole Blue, WRT45g with a Linksys AC1900 about 18 months ago.

I can sit outside on my back patio and still pull 100mbs down when I don't want to sit in my home office for a meeting, for example. 

Still haven't been tempted to pony for Gigabit service. We already have 300mb down and it's plenty.

I looked at that TP-Link mesh system and I keep seeing that their terms of service basically says that they're going to scrape your browsing history, device info, and anything else they can and ship the data off to their servers.

First question, do you need a router (basically an all-in-one device that hooks up to your internet connection on one side and handles all of the network traffic on the other side) or a simple access point that turns regular wired network connectivity into wireless?

Usually, the cable or DSL modem is taking care of the router part already, so you may not need that part and only need one or more access points.

I'm pretty happy with Ubiquiti access points - a single one was able to cover our ~2500 sq ft single story house in NV, however it's struggling to cover our current two story + basement place so I probably need to add a second one for the basement.

Oh, with the mesh/extender types... If you can run ethernet cable between all of the routers, you'll have the best signal from all of them. Not necessary, but nice.

We settled on Eero  because every other router we used wouldn't get through the thick solid timber walls of our house. 
 

I'm a fan of the Ubiquiti gear - so much so that I even have a share of their stock. 

I'm a fan of Eero and just put in a Netgear Orbi at our house. If you're looking to solve a coverage challenge (I.e. dead spots) and value ease of setup the Eero will work well. If you need to be able to host 5 concurrent streaming sessions, the Netgear Orbi is a great option. I bought the RBK50 model refurbished from Netgear for $150 about a month ago via a deal on SlickDeals. My office is two floors above my router (which is in my basement), and I'm seeing download speeds north of 200 MB per second. And that's with others streaming and consuming bandwidth!

whatever, apple already probably does it with my phone and Microsoft probably does it with my pc, so they already know all the freaky E36 M3 i look for
