I'm looking to replace the kit lens (Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G) that came with our Nikon D80 with something in a similar range but with better glass and lower F-stop to get away from using the flash indoors so much. Oh, and not looking for a prime either and would like to keep the price grm-friendly.
Suggestions?
Price GRM-friendly is going to be the killer. Nikon has a zoom lens with a similar range that has a constant f/2.8 but that's more of a challenge friendly budget lens. There are a couple of aftermarket lenses in that category that are somewhat cheaper, though.
According to some of the reviews I've read from source I trust, the 18-55 is actually a pretty decent lens apart from the lack of low light capability. Better glass is relative then, the f/2.8 ones have to have better glass simply because they need to control the various aberrations better due to the larger glass surface.
I know you said 'no prime lenses' but the one I really like is the 35/1.8 Nikon. It's inexpensive, the f/1.8 is useful in low light and compared to the f/2.8 zoom lenses you're not carrying around a stupidly large hunk of glass around.
My other favorite lens on my D200 is the 12-24mm f/4 but that of no help for you (it's expensive and has a not so great F-stop).
all depends on your budget...
I roll with a 17-50 f/2.8 tamron (non VC)... MUCH cheaper then a fast canon/nikon zoom but still not cheap... I love being able to shoot inside with minimal flash...
but to be honest if I had it to do again i'd have done the 28-75 f/2.8 or something along those lines for a smidge more reach and use the kit lens for the wider end untill I could afford a good wide angle lens... but I do love the kit i've got.
as for the flash... why are you wanting to get rid of the flash?... is it because the flash bothers people or because of the harsh shadows and such?... if it's the later i'd suggest a good mid end bounce flash... I need to get one still... but prefer to shoot without as it attracts attention and people tend to be less natrual when they see a big camera and flash in their face (also a reason I want a longer fast lens)
