I had learned CS2 9 years ago, last used CS3 probably 6 years ago. Since then I have occasionally toyed with Gimp, currently on Gimp 2. The only lessons I remember is how to do basic adjustments in levels, and to set my print resolution to 300 ppi.
I'm trying to recall a certain tool from CS2, and if it is in Gimp. It was a color adjuster, 3 sliders(RBG?CMY?) and a monotone(desaturation?) option. It had the effect of being a B&W converter with the ability to get the effect of B&W shot with color filters.
Other tips? I prefer to do as little clean up in post as possible, no heavy cut/paste. Thank in advance.
Unsharp Mask of course is almost always used. Crop of course.
If you are shooting RAW, you will want some sort of RAW editor, lots of good (non-permanent) photo adjustments there.
There are several ways to do this in GIMP. The most basic is to use Color Balance, Hue-Saturation, and Desaturate, all in the Colors menu. There's also a tool somewhere that purports to convert to monochrome with filter effects; I found it lacking and have forgotten where to find it. For the desaturation process there are a lot of options. I tend to prefer the Film Emulation presets in G'MIC (current stable build of GIMP includes this), but there's also an interesting GEGL option called c2g, and a few others.
So for now I'm just looking at my options for B&W conversions. So far the best I have is the noir filter in my iPhone. But when I imported my pictures to my computer it didn't carry any of the editing I did. I think I need to send it over some other method.
Google how to convert to grey scale for the program you are using

What is this GIMP you speak of.
Graphical Image Manipulation Program...Open source graphics package. Think the Linux of Photoshop, and it's free.
There is a Photoshop skin you can install if you know most of the Photoshop commands and layouts to make transitions easier.

If you're a photo editing tourist like me, GIMP works quite well and I find I look just as long on how to do something in photoshop as I do in GIMP.
This is an excellent resource for GIMP: http://blog.patdavid.net/p/getting-around-in-gimp.html
And specifically for B&W conversion, a five-part series: http://blog.patdavid.net/2012/11/getting-around-in-gimp-black-and-white.html
