Registry cleaner?

Does anyone know a good free registry cleaner?

There are all types of rregisters: heating, computer, etc... Which type are you trying to clean?

I generally don't recommend those things, they can do more harm than good. They could be worth a shot if you want to try one last thing before doing a clean install, but otherwise I recommend not crapping up the registry in the first place.

I can't do a clean install. It is on a laptop I have to work with at work and it is ungodly slow so I am trying to clean it up.

My age is showing. You've done the usual things to see what's actually running: any extraneous programs in the background, defraged lately, and clean out temp internet files at the end of the day? The last two can greatly effect speed without going on to other more invasive techniques.

Have you done any recent program upgrades that have taken a chunk of RAM that has slowed it down?

These may seem obvious to you, but, sometimes the obvious is often overlooked. Just trying to help you with your heater register problem

I've used CCleaner as well with good results on a couple systems. Screwing with the registry always makes me nervous though.

Registry cleaners are a bit of an overhang from the W2K/XP area and often do more harm than good on more modern Windows.

What OS is the machine based on? If it is XP, you obviously would know that it has massive memory leaks, which is why it is so important to restart XP machines every couple of days. I always laughed at people that simply put their XP based machines to sleep

another vote for ccleaner - it will back up the keys it takes out so u can restrore it to oringal - or you can do a manuel backup of the registry files before running.

+3 for CCleaner. I run it occasionally, and haven't messed anything up yet. Been using it for years. There have been a couple of times where I really did notice a difference in speed. If it's a work laptop, I'd scan for spyware as well. Never trust the previous person.

Definitely use CCLeaner, I used it with great results on my work computer...

I have met very few IT that do that.
