A bit of heat then put a pillow behind your back so you don't roll over onto it.

Or... Grab one of those J or C shaped pillows meant for keeping pregnant ladies on their side. They actually work pretty well in situations like this as they help you not roll onto your front or back.

They also work well for keeping you propped up after rotator cuff surgery.

Violently ill, and its possible i bounced off the tub on the way to worship a the porcelain throne. You?

Not too far off for me.  Had just finished the umpteenth trip to the bathroom, and passed out standing at the counter.  Near as I can tell, I hit the corner of the bathroom counter, the edge of the tub, and the bathroom scale on my way down.

It'll get better....   I recently also broke, or dislocated, or both? some ribs...

I was also recovering from the "crud" when I broke them so I was coughing a LOT... and yes it hurt a LOT!!

Its been 5 weeks not and most of the pain is gone.... just a little tender in one area now

CBD doesn't get you high, but it does help with pain....

I wonder if something numbing, like lidocaine might help if applied on the area near the cracked ribs?

I got one of these big foam wedges when I broke my sternum. It helps to get comfortable if you don’t have a recliner.

The coworker i know that had this problem used painkillers for the first few nights to sleep then said it slowly got better afterwards as long as he didnt push it.

Ibuprofen (Motrin) and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) work differently and as such, you can take both at the same time.  They don't counter-act each other and there is no danger in mixing them.

Buy a large bottle, each of the generic brand of your choice

I would recommend to start with 3 pills of Ibuprofen and then 6 hours later 3 pills of Acetaminophin then 6 hours later 3 more Ibuprofen, on and on.  Set your phone to remind you which one to take every 6 hours.  Keep this up for as long as needed, like a week.

Keep some food in your stomach.  Since you had Noro you  probably now are "whistle clean" in your tract so get some food in there.

Little known fact of Norovirus:  The disease is named after Norwalk, Ohio where an outbreak occurred in 1968. (Happens to be one town over from me.)

I've cracked ribs and yes it does hurt for a while and uncomfortable. Motorcycle accidents were the cause. Pulled muscles around the ribs and that hurt too but not as long and cracked ribs. But I can also attest to something else that hurts just as much, maybe a bit more. Certainly more inconvenient. Crack/break your tailbone, coccyx I think is the technical term. Hurts to sit, hurts to lay flat on your back, even hurts a little to just to stand and walk. Don't even mention sitting on the throne, that hurts more than just sitting in a chair.

This is all kinda what i was thinking.

It would be different if there was an awesome story to go along with it instead of just having the norovirus last week and being violently ill.

Sitting in the companycar doesnt hurt. Wonder if anyone would notice if i left it running for air conditioning and slept in it.

Theres this topical stuff- looks janky as E36 M3. Called "stop pain". I think it's a basic lidocaine spray. Wont help the bone itself, works really good on muscles.

I slept in a chair from my daughter room last night.  I didn't sleep well, but i SLEPT. major win. Johns idea about the drugs are helping too, as well as ice.

Hiccups suck.

I've broken a lot of bones and can say unequivocally that broken ribs are the worst.  The only solution I found was copious prenatal vitamins (while eating) and a good stretch session each morning in a hot shower.  Generally there is not a ton to be done for the 2-4 months they take to heal.

That long to heal? Damn.

Why can't I heal like wolverine???

Good luck. I remember the mess my father was when he broke some ribs, punctured a lung and broke his clavicle after a dog ran him off the road on a Ducati 750SS. Being a recovering alcoholic and substance user he refused anything stronger than Tylenol. He ended up sleeping in a reclining camp chair for a bit. That was awful for me because he was in the living room and I could here his snoring.

I would double up on Motrin. If you have to cough, sneeze etc grab a pillow and hug it tightly. There isn’t much else you can do but ride it out, and they will be sore the whole time.

pretty much

Figure you will have a month of misery, more or less

My mom suggested to my wife that i try the "zero gravity chair" that dad had when he broke his back. Its worth a shot, right?

Just be sure there’s someone available to help you get it back upright and get out— at least the first time.

In reply to Dusterbd13 :

It’s not really necessarily bad— I spent some time in mine after shoulder surgery.

The only possible problem is what it might take to shift your weight enough to tip the chair forward to get out

Is shortness of breath normal with cracked rivs, or do i need to go back to the doctor?

I had a Bloody Mary birthday 5? years ago. Fell off the ladder to my 12' ceiling shop. Cracked/broke ribs on my left side. Yep, that was one of the most heinously painful of my many stupid moments. I have sympathy.

On another note, my mom is a nurse. she says motrin is the most powerful over the counter pain relief. I promise this is not a poke at your manhood, but get some lady problem pills A.S.A.P.

I had occasion shortness of breath the last time but I would get it checked if it seems too long.  The older you are the more they hurt too.

Try to avoid shiny happy people like me.  I had a friend come off a snowmobile pretty badly, and several months later, I had a great evening making him laugh.  He found if he leaned his ribs against the corner of a building, it hurt less.

having broken multiple ribs on both sides on two different occasions i wish there was something i could tell you that works other than time and very careful movements. at about 6 weeks you will wake up and notice that they dont really hurt anymore even though your ready for them to. the worst part both times was at the two week point i found myself having to sneeze just once every day at exactly 4pm i could set my watch by it(not fun!) good luck
