Where Peter locks himself in the car?......

http://www.wesh.com/news/19063789/detail.html

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A woman locked in her car in Kissimmee called 911 on Tuesday. "It's getting very hot in here, and I'm not feeling well," the caller told the dispatcher. The woman said nothing electrical was working, so her locks wouldn't open. The dispatcher calmly told her to pull the lock up with her hand. "Um, I'm sorry," said the woman, who was not identified, after the lock opened. And, no, officials say, this was not an early April Fool's Day joke.

haha. You can actually do that in a BMW. If somebody locks the car with the keys and you're inside, you can't unlock the doors from the inside.

really now? That seems a bit unsafe.

Also on some cars don't the door lock pegs pull down flush when locked? So I could see where in those cases an electrical problem could cause someone to get locked in their car. Hmmm never thought about that before lol.

The front doors on my escort pull down flush when locked. You have to use the interior handle to unlock the doors.

Yes you can, but you have to pull on the handle twice. I have no idea why but there is german dude somewhere who can defend it as perfectly logical I'm sure.

If it's German, I'm sure the reasoning was that they could perform the same function but have three times as many parts.

He was talking about "double-locking". Using the key, turn the door lock to lock twice. This should lock it from the outside and inside. No amount of handle pulling will open it.

Pretty sure that's not legal here in the US, certain it's not legal in CT and SD. Statute for motor vehicles requires an all mechanical inside door handle that will open the door to allow escape.

(Both of those state codes were printed out for study while building a kit car while I was in the Navy, nothing but time to learn all the details on a submarine...)

I've seen those cars, they have a sticker on the windshield to remind you of that feature. Seems mighty dumb to me; if you get in a crash and it's on double lock howthahell are ya gonna get out?

Maybe you can only do that with the key from the outside.

In my car ('03 Jetta), if you do that you can still open the door, but the alarm will go off. That was quite a surprise to me the first time it happened... 4 years after I bought the car... I didn't know it had an alarm...

The decal said something about it being possible for an occupant to get locked inside and cautioned against small kids and pets etc. I don't remember the exact verbiage. I do remember looking at it and going 'Whaaaa?'.

From what I found on teh int3erweb, it goes like this: if you put the key in the door lock, turn it to the right and then hold it for 3 seconds this puts it in 'double lock' mode. Now the only way to unlock the car is with the key in the drivers' side door lock cylinder ('double lock' disables the remotes, passenger side key cylinder etc).

EDIT: The whole thing about the woman calling 911 reminds me of a Buick customer who brought her car in with the windshield broken out- from the inside. She claimed the door locks jammed and she couldn't get out so she beat a hole in the windshield with her coffee cup. we couldn't find a damn thing wrong with it, it had the 'slides' rather than the pull up knobs and we pointed this out to her. She REALLY went off like a rocket then, we figured that never even crossed her mind.

There is a video somewhere of a VERY hungover middle age guy locked in a BMW with police officers all around trying not to laugh. It seems he parked to sleep off the difficulty of driving. When he woke he was in the car with the alarm armed and no keys. Any time he tried to open the lock the car pulled the lock back closed and triggered the alarm. Wheres that woozy smiley when you need it?

Back in the day (late '60s-maybe '80s?) with a BMW you could not push the door lock down(drivers' side) and lock the door. You had to lock the door with the key. Result: NO ONE (unless you were really talented) locked their keys in a BMW...

Mercedes also. The way to llock the keys under the mat for a customer was to lock the drivers door from the rear door with the rear door open. Then close the rear door.

No. If you lock the door with the key, no number of pulls on the interior handle will open the door. Of course, you can't lock the keys out of the car if you're inside, but someone could lock you inside. The theory is that if somebody breaks the window of a locked car, they can't open it by reaching in and pulling the handle.

And it doesn't matter how many times you turn the key in the door. Lock it once and the doors cannot be opened from the interior.

This is different than if you just lock the doors from inside with the locking mechanism or the button. If you do that, just pull on the handle twice and it'll open.

Here's an experiement to try.

Roll down your driver's side window and close the door. Lock the car. Reach in and unlock the car using the 'unlock' switch. See what happens. Try it again using the interior handle.

There was no unlock button in the Z3, but it's worth a try in some other BMWs.

But it does not work with the interior handles. If somebody locked me in my Z3, I would not be able to get out unless I forced the top down and climbed out.

don't laugh out loud guys. This happens to me before. I live in hot tropical climate and my husband drives a 525 e90. I'm 5 months pregnant and got locked in when he step down to buy papers before walking across the street heading for a restaurant. He had this habit of locking the door when ever he steps down. Not realizing i was getting slow and clumsy to get down, he locked me in. I pulled the handle many many times and it got very hot in here with the noon sunlight cookin me in. I felt i was getting more and more difficult to breathe. i push the unlock button many times but still it won't budge. i start to panick and i kicked and slam the window hard to get attention. i tell you guys, it's like 40 degrees in there and i cried my lungs out. No amount of hard kicks or slamming could break the windows. my cell is out of batt, i sweat with minimal oxygen to take and there he is coming back in 15 minutes later wondering why am i not there yet. finally he unlocks the car asking me stupid question as to why i stayed in the car. I nearly died there with the baby!! I cried my lungs out with my hands shaken and my legs trembling. It was like ages in there. The most scary part is imagining he talking in the cell end up looking for me 1/2 hours later... with foods on the table waiting for me while i died in the car.
