Honestly I am a bit surprised. I knew we'd be near the bottom, I didn't know we would BE the bottom. But, I suppose any time the state government is so rife with corruption it makes the mafia say, "Yous are a buncha crooks!" a bottom rung rating should be expected.
We need a Mississippi.
What did you expect? Your state is run by its biggest city....You guys really need to form a similar arrangement as Washington DC for Chicago.
The only good thing Ohio produces are astronauts, apparently.

We probably would have even had the first man on the moon had it not been for that damned launch pad fire.....I think the state of Ohio set that.

And for the other to arguing about which is more unimportant, Ohio or Indiana, you are equals in everyone else's eyes. Flyover country starts at the Hudson River.

They're just like Chicago... if it ain't in the city, it don't exist.
Fact: southern Illinois starts immediately below interstate 80.

Not the part that pays the bills. Without a healthy supply of tax money from NYC New York would be the poorest state in the US.

But without the drain of NYC's needs, would it? I mean, you wouldn't need 34,000 police officers making an average of $53k per year. That's almost $2B right there. OR the transit system. Or the sewage and water plants. what about the 15k NYFD employees averaging $45k per year? Just to provide the basic services, NYC eats up $70B this year.
So.... if NYC was cut off from the rest of the state, would it be able to support itself?
In reply to Bobzilla:
Probably easily on just the money made between Broadway and Water St below Liberty. I'm pretty sure it's supporting 80% of the nation at this point.

No.. Have you ever been to western NY it is bueatiful but very sparely populated.
let's see.. Industry.
Carrier - Moving out of Syracuse
Kodak, Bauch & Lomb, Xerox - Dead, Dead and really dead.
American Axle - It did OK in Buffalo for a while and now has moved south
Remington Arms - Moving south (don't believe the SAFE law stuff, I worked there and they have been wanting to move for years)
Utica Boiler? - maybe
Alcoa - a few plants, nothing great
Cummins - is in Jamestown, not growing and far out in the country
GM Honeyoe Falls - Gone.
Seriously, take Rochester NY for example.. If it wasn't for it's good universities bringing in dollars it would be a ghost town. All industry has packed up and left.
Western NY produces little anymore.. They are TOAST without NYC money.

They'd figure it out in one fracking New York minute though, Utica shale gas.

They won't do it though. Western NY is beautiful but also food stamp city.
In reply to etifosi:
I wouldn't bet on it. Most if the anti fracking people I've heard are based upstate. They've been brainwashed to believe their toilets will shoot fire. That is an actual conversation I've had with some of my wife's family who all live north of Albany and have at least one spouse working for the state because they chased all the jobs away.
In reply to Fueled by Caffeine:
Most of my wife's family worked for BASF until they chased the factory away.

Here's a question. Without NYC, would they have passed the laws that chased away all the manufacturing?

Wow, I can't leave you people alone for 5 minutes and the trolls get loose. Although I did find it enlightening that I rank number 5 in best states, so there is that. Apparently I drove through the equivalent of hell on my way back, hitting Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

yup. Laws didn't chase away all the manufacturing. Rochester decline was entirely due to the inability of the imaging industry to switch to digital.
Remington/carrrier are leaving due to Unions and the high cost of labor.
Sure the Taxes are high, but industry gets a tax break.
So, as mentioned a few pages ago, I experienced a super close fly-by from a V-22 Osprey last Sunday and it was speculated that it was part the urban planning (I’ll leave it at that) which is currently taking place in Los Angeles.
Today, what I at first thought was a dog catcher's truck pulled up outside of my office in Sylmar, then two, then three…ultimately, a total of six “dog catchers” along with a command vehicle were parked right outside my window.
The drivers were all armed and one was wearing a windbreaker that said police.
I imagine this is more of the “urban planning” but either I wondered into the long odds of two close encounters in a matter of days or this is a really big operation.
Here’s a link to my Flickr account where I posted a pic:
Sylmar, CA - Dec 11, 2014
BTW, while you’re rummaging around in there, notice the subway car gift. Wally sent that to one of my daughters…nicest guy in the universe!

That's probably the IRS serving a cease and desist and confiscating records. They had a similar sized force when they did that too an ex boss of mine about fifteen years ago. Did full background checks on all four of his employees too. They take that E36 M3 very seriously.
