Coincidentally, the local morning jocks have a lot of touring comedians on. Just a couple days ago they were talking with a guest about Rickles and how sharp he still was. I was honestly surprised to learn he was still alive at that point.
My father hated him, but I thought he was kinda funny. Definitely an icon.
Legend. One of the first people I remember seeing on TV who would actually rip on fellow celebrities. I know it was all in jest, but it was refreshing, all the same.
I loved this guy. His appearances on Carson were the best. The stories about him and Sinatra are hilarious.
I'm glad to hear in real life he was a sweetheart. So few are.
I always thought he was great as an comedy actor, but I didn't care for his standup routine. I still remember him on Get Smart.
Like Dr. Hess said I thought his film comedy was better than standup. I thought this movie was one of his best roles.
I saw an A&E(?) biography of Bob Newhart. The whole thing was great, but the absolutely funniest part was a segment hosted by Newhart's daughter. The Rickles and the Newharts went on a vacation to Europe together, Don Rickles was operating the camcorder, made some typical Don Rickles comment about something and then put the camera down. The thing is, he never turned it off. The next few minutes was just video of their feet and the sidewalk as Bob Newhart and Don Rickles walked through the streets and commented on everything that they saw, without ever knowing that they were being recorded. It was one of the funniest things that I've ever seen.

After working with him for 2 months I am with your father. He was a bitter litte man that didnt choose his audience very well.
Its fine if you paid for his show but when you are in a public situation and he berates everyone around him to a point of making people upset and laughing at them for being uncomfortable. He was just flat out mean.
I didnt put up with his crap and he tried to have me fired. That backfired on him, I ended up getting more money to finish the show and he was the one who was uncomfortable.
Good riddance I say.
I thought it was just me…oh look, he’s totally humiliating somebody, isn’t that hilarious; no.
Howard Stern was the big deal back when I was struggling to get through grad school while working two jobs and dealing with a wife that couldn’t manage to keep drugs or other men’s wieners outside of her body. That did it for me, I just wanted positive stuff, there was ample dark stuff in my life to not need to go looking for it and all of these years later now that everything is fine I’m still turned off to it.
