Yeah, he was a good guy. I always like the good guys with long, medium-profile careers like that. Thank you, Mr. Morgan.
I hadn't seen or heard about him in years so I presumed he was already dead.
Great character actor and was much more prolific than many people realize.
His best appearance was in the one of the early MASH TV episodes (I believe, it wasn't in the Movie was it?), before he was the Colonel. The line I always remember:
"Hannibal... he was a 'darky' you know..."
Damn, that sucks. I remember the 'Dragnet' character best.
This is color but I remember the black and white episodes from when I was a kid. (shuffles away, mumbling about showing his age)
His career included a few movie "heavies", usually in Westerns, and my one time favorite tv shows where he starred with Cara Williams: Pete and Gladys, (one of the many I love Lucy wannabes.)
He played a General in an early episode of MASH. In that episode he played a very senile officer who was driven even loonier by the MASH folks because he was dangerous and they wanted to get him a "section 8" discharge.
Yeah, I thought he had died, too.
I will have to watch support your local sheriff and support your local gunfighter tonight in rememberance.
Damnit. Now I have him singing "I like to go swimmin' with bow legged wimmin" stuck in my head.
In reply to Woody:
Abe is 6 years younger.
TVLand re-runs MASH between 6-8. One was a good Col. Potter story.

Abyssinia, Harry.
"When they make you a Colonel, they remove the bone in your head that causes you to explain orders.."
A lot of people don't know he coined the phrase that's what she said
