If you weren't such a straight laced hardassed man we would have ended up with Willie Vanillie singing Freebird.
One of my employees goes "Funny, the band beat him to death!"... Think about it.

This is probably going to get me ostracized around here. I can "play" Sweet Home Alabama in my head but I can't for the life of me think of Freebird. I'm not even sure I'd know it if I heard it.
I hate Sweet Home Alabama.

I'd be very surprised if you haven't heard Freebird. I'm not really a fan of most of their stuff--Give Me Three steps is the best IMHO.

here ya go..

it's one of the greatest songs ever. it just builds and builds and winds up in an awesome 4 minute jam at the end. it's one of those songs where you just have to sit back and let the music absorb you- those 3 guitars just suck me right into it... .
but i like Tuesday's Gone and The Ballad of Curtis Lowe about as much..
Before radio stations ran 20 min blocks of commercials you could tell the DJ had to go to the bathroom when they broke out the live version of Freebird.
I DJed in college, and the bathroom was one or two flights down from the studio. Those of us who did the night shifts had the place to ourselves. We compiled a list of songs that were good for those potty breaks. Sorry, though, no Skynard.
Lemme guess, James Brown Live at the Apollo?

What was it then?
Great White Buffalo
Won't Get Fooled Again
Stairway to Heaven
Inagodadavida
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
I once had a gym teacher named Skip Mortimer. True story. Always thought that his name would have been a good band name.
And I'm a fan of Simple Man. One of my favorite songs, actually. Oh, and it has to be the original version, not that absolute crap butt rock lame wannabe version from Shinedown. I hate that band for what they did to that song. I will however let the Deftones version of it slide every once in a while.

My list off the top of my head would be:
Alice's Restaurant
American Pie
Mountain Jam
Hey Jude
Hotel California
Kashmir
Layla
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights
Edmund Fitzgerald
Bat out of Hell
It's quite possible, given that I think David and I were at college around the same time, that you need to be looking for newer, faster, noisier and less crafted songs. I don't remember a whole lot of dinosaur rock on the college station. Jane's Addiction, sure.
LOL Dinosaur Rock, is that like Fraggle Rock?

Yeah, we didn't play AOR. I usually did general rotation, Wednesday nights midnight until 3:00 am. For the longer songs, think more Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, etc. I honestly don't remember what else was on the list. I just remember that someone started one and people added to it. Also, the booth was a total mess. It might even still be up there.
I used to sub for Loud Fast Rules, too. You didn't take a break during that show.
At the time we were just starting to add CDs to the mix, but the collection was probably 99% vinyl meaning everything had to be manually queued up. We had two turntables (and a microphone) plus two CD players and three cart machines. I wonder what the current setup looks like.
That would explain my neighbor blasting the Sky Nerd today, I have to figure out what I am going to respond with a 3am this morning when I get home
I guess if I had a band, it would have been called Bob Schwab.
Local weatherman down here named Rob Fowler.

Local band named... Fowler's Mustache.

I'll take "Tuesdays Gone" over "Freebird" any day.

Threadjack!
I am a huge hockey fan, been playing since I was 5 and reffing for the past three years. I'm into the game and into the business. I am always amazed that Alabama can field more than a club team, and on top of that, a competitive one! Awesome to see the sport spread.
It is weird, I don't have a problem with the college teams down there, but find I don't like it when a city that doesn't have natural outdoor hockey has an NHL team.

"Simple Man" is my favorite Skynyrd tune. I haven't heard the Shinedown version, but here's a nice rendition from a later version of the original band - with RVZ's little brother at the mike:

Not bad.
