He died in the hospital (a large building with lots of doctors and patients in it, but that's not important now) of complications from pneumonia. He was 84.

every one remembers his comedy but prior to Airplane he was quite a well respected serious actor... Forbidden Planet and the Poseidon Adventure come to mind... RIP

I think that's why he worked so well as a straight man - he'd done the serious roles. He just kept doing them, and it was the context of everything around him that made it so funny. Straightest man in the world.
