Recycle in peace.
So time for a new one. Searching on line  I see the same size TV (55") for $400-$800-$1600 by the same manufacturer.  All LED  same ratings

Yeh, I round up a bit to include taxes. But is the $800 twice as good as the $400? And the $1600 4 times as good?  Or last 4 times longer?

Make sure you are paying attention to whether it is a smart TV or not.  The VAST majority are.

I suspect as an avowed Luddite, you may prefer a TV that is not a smart TV.

We’re on year three of a 55” TCL 4K smart TV that I bought online at the Zon.  It was in the $450.00 range if I’m remembering correctly.   So far, so good and even halfway decent sound from the on board speakers for regular TV.    Connecting newer TVs to older surround sound set ups is getting more challenging as the newer TVs don’t always have audio output jacks.  I bought an optical audio output to analog (RCA jack) converter when I bought this one ($15 or so) so I could keep the 20 year old Sony receiver.

Don't discount the smart TV part, most come loaded with Roku, Pandora, Spotify, Netflix and others.  If you have decent WiFi there’s a lot of content  available, often for free.

There is absolutely a threshold of diminishing returns.  We've splurged on higher-end TVs a couple of times but lately we just buy entry-level 4K TVs from a name brand.

The smart tv operating system can make or break a tv in my opinion.  I'm not of fan of the Sony OS; Visio is glitchy; FireTV OS is ok; my personal favorite so far is Samsung.

I'm not an electronics guy, but this place is awesome for helping you choose the right TV.

It's legit. (Not a small paddle boat).

Just here to say that TV shopping is infuriating.

Thank you.  That helped tremendously. I wound up getting a 65" Samsung.

That's basically what I did. A 65" Samsung. We're signing in as I type.

SWMBO insisted I don't get a tube type black and white with the round face.  So she got. 65 inch Samsung  with all sorts of bells and Gee Gaws

So I've got a 51" Samsung plasma from 2011, 720P. Am I realistically getting an upgrade with something like a 65" TCL 6 series or any of these other newfangled QLED OMG WTF BBQ's?

We don't really game here, mainly movies, limited sports, and tv.  I don't *think* we are missing anything, but I could use a new garage tv- which would be the old plasma.

I keep my smarts separate from my TV. I don't trust a TV maker to even have basic security, never mind providing updates. The smart in my TVs comes from the boxes plugged into them. They're just big monitors.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure any of our three screens (main, sewing room and shop) are smart. But they all have AppleTVs plugged into them.

So my vote would be to ignore the relative smartness of the tv and just disable whatever wireless it has.
