Howdy,
I'll be making the trek to R.A. for The Mitty next month and have a dumb question. The "rules" say I cannot bring alcohol onto the grounds. Now, I understand how track "rules" work ie: no roping off of areas, no scaffolding, no unauthorized motor vehicles etc... right?
So, how's this work? cheaters for beer cans? (you old timers know what I'm talking about) plastic cups? or, as I'm hoping, a blind eye is cast unless issue(s) arise?
By the way, I'm more excited for this event than I was for the 12hr last week.
I've never had an issue with beer at Road Atlanta, ever. Bring em in!
Just as I thought. As I read "state of Georgia and Hall county" my brain decoded as "our asses are now covered, it's between you guys"
Yeah, as long as you don't leave it on the passenger seat or something when you enter the gate, they won't bother you. Road Atlanta had no serving license for about 30yrs., people have been bringing their own for so long there'd be hell to pay if they actually started enforcing it. Heck, I didn't even know they had their license back until Petit 08 or so.
Only thing they've been strict about lately is fires. They are enforcing the firepit rule, no open fires on the ground anymore.
Sunday Sunday Sunday no beer sales so buy accordingly ! We are just about to unleash our taco Joint menu ! lotsa suprises in store ! We going to give away a GRM Taco rama fiesta extravigonzo shama lammadamma groove fest prize pack! So Look us up on top of the hill .
I just found a deal on 72 inch by 164 ft banner material for $65 bux anyone want to make one hell of a slip and slide ?
In reply to Karl La Follette:
I enjoy shenanigans.
What do I need to know? Where should I be looking to camp? Where should I not? Are golf carts as necessary as Ive been told? While not new to sportycar races... by a long shot... I am a Road Atl. virgin.
In reply to maddabe:
Camping at Turn 3 is good, as well as 10A or the outside of the back stretch. If you can afford a golf cart, it would be helpful as the infield is a bit hilly. Good spectator spot is Spectator Hill. Just get you lawn chair out and sit on the hill as they come down thru the Esses. That, or 10. The braking zone in 10 is really good. Another good spot is right past the bridge looking down at 12, the cars just fall away.
Thank You much. When you say "hilly", if MidOhio were a "5", where would RA rank?

Road Atlanta is much, much hillier than MidOhio. If Mid is a 5, RA would be a 9.
If you aren't inclined to walking long distances, or ummm....up inclines, a golf-cart would be handy.
"9-10". To walk the infield would equal a weeks worth of working out

I've done it. I'm still tired.
I wouldn't know, can't find the beer behind my wine and liquor
Looks like it's time to become middle aged... DAMMNIT! Thanks for the advise guys... I owe each of you a beer. Look for the banner from the '97 Mid-O vintage event. It's red, and mos likely will be joined with a silver 03 Accord 2dr V6 (Mom's hot rod).
Honestly, I can't recall being this excited for a race since I was a kid.
Yeah, they don't enforce the beer as much as the campfires and offroad vehicle stickers(golf carts included). Street legal motorcycles are $5 and offroad vehicles are $50 from what I remember.
Hilly... damn straight. just so you can say you "experienced" the hills, take a walk from turn 3 to spectator hill(turn 5) and you will be calling someone to come pick you up. That is the worst hump I have made since being in the Marine Corps.
If you decide to walk the infield, I salute you.
You go in looking like this:
You leave looking like this (results will vary)
Are you people crazy or do you just live in flat country? The infield has one big hill. Woo hoo.
In reply to Otto Maddox:
Its actually 2 hills. The big blue blob on that map and then the turn 5 area. The thing that makes it seem bigger is the cut that goes in between the two at the bottom of the esses. So if we are going to compare state to state race tracks, it makes Barber look like an A cup.

just watch the video going around, it should give you some sense, but it's pretty horrible as it undulates generally upward toward the back, and then undulates generally down toward the front, and then back up right before the front straight if you walk the interior perimeter...
Here's a little vid someone made on an infield road.

I am a fat sack of out of shape E36 M3 with bad knees, and it's not that bad...unless it's August....or you're sober. Really no excuse for the latter.

Where's the dead cat?
Someone remembers! I did Dead Cat in a full-sized Jeep Cherokee at the Runoffs years ago. They poured oil on the road so that all four would spin. We were all still in our worker uniforms, people were stoked that the "officials" liked to party too.

The first video was the easier side of walking the infield IMHO.
The second video, those were the guys I was hanging out with that year. We took that "Most Interesting Man Alive" cardboard cutout and put it in the middle of that road trying to get people to run over it, while yelling "Do a burnout!" of course.
