I'm making a big road trip this summer, leaving Weds.
First leg is Austin to Atlanta.
Second leg is Atlanta to Carlisle, PA.
Third leg is Carlisle to Stratford, ONT
Fourth leg is Stratford to Eastern ONT (Sharbot Lake area)
Fifth leg is back to Austin via an undetermined route.
I really enjoy offbeat kitchy stuff like the worlds largest ball of string. I'm also a foodie and would love suggestions on good local eats. I also very much enjoy scenic routes so any suggestions where I can get off the highway and take a pretty drive that won't take tons of time would be great
Aaaand go.

While you're in the Gettysburg area, check out what's got to be the largest single-location collection of Corvairs at the Corvair Ranch.

Nope. the Corvair Ranch is a repair and restoration shop with about 350 parts cars out back.
If you're coming through Vicksburg, there's the Civil War battlefield. Not far off the road and fascinating drive. I guess it depends on how you're coming through Mississippi.

Back to Autsin.
OK. Rt 66. Few good ideas from here;
Two Wheel Oklahoma
Stop by Northern Atlanta for a bit and I will buy you a drink or five.
Road Atlanta is cool, but like any racetrack, it's kinda boring when nothing is going on.
if you like drive-in diners, visit the Varsity while in Atlanta. It's right off the I75/I85 downtown connector at North Ave. They still run 50's style carhop service and the food is.....memorable.

Sounds like a blast. I'm 37 but always felt like I should have been a baby boomer. I want to open a drive-in diner/movie theater. Have the front of the parking lot be the diner, and the back side have the snack stand for the movie theater.
I even thought of having a few nights a year be nostalgia nights where any car older than 1980 gets in for the same number of cents as the year of their car. Like a 1968 car would get in for 68 cents. Maybe have car shows and swap meets.
Sharbot Lake !! I used hang around out there back in my university days. That would probably be before you were born, but it was a nice place to relax. When in Stratford you should hit one of the plays.

Nice area. I have a camper up on Crotch Lake. This will be my 37th year going up there.
Not far from Carlisle in Harrisburg is my employer (beer!) and you can also make a pit stop at the Hershey Antique Auto Museum, another 7 miles down the road.
If you're in to weird food, there's a Belgian cafe in Carlisle. Mussels and duck-fat frites all the weirdest imported Belgian beer you can imagine.

Hey, if you come by London, Ontario (just off the 401/402 route from Michigan, an hour from Stratford) and want to stop in for a beer or whatever, hit me up! PM me and I'll send you my cell number.
We can fix up your ride if you have a breakdown in the area too. We'll have a hoist installed as of tomorrow.
There's a weekly cruise night about ten minutes from here on the grounds of the mansion of a local guy who owns every year of Cadillac ever built, sometimes he has the showroom open, sometimes not. The cruise night is Thursday evening and it usually has lots of '50s and '60s iron, but also gets everything from JDM supercars to MGs and ACVWs. Dad's brought the DeLorean out a few times: http://www.countrycruizin.com/
Also there's a giant apple near Cobourg, Ont. that you can climb to the top of. I vaguely remember doing that when I was like ten. Definitely meets your 'kitchy' criteria. http://www.thebigapple.ca/
Enter the US at Windsor into Detriot. Stop here . We spent three days there and didn't get to the factory tour.

+2 million for the Hank. I love the Henry Ford, and not just because the Le Mans winning Ford GT is there, Gurney bubble and all!

If you've been going to the Sharbot Lake area for years, you know that cottage roads rock. Look for the ones that go around the OTHER side of a lake than the highway. I've found some wicked sports car roads that way.
In Stratford, look for Bieber :) And if you meet anyone with the last name McTavish, they're a relative of mine so say hi.

Sharbot Lake? Sheesh, better bring a banjo.
"Crotch Lake"? did I read that right? Egad, man!

Yes. Yes you did. Think in Scotch/British terms. A "crotch" to them is a narrow bend. ... But it does make for a TON of good crotch jokes.

I'll be on the lookout. I know some McLeods and some Dows up there. And I ironically went to HS with a kid named Mick Tavish. Makes you wonder if he's some distant relative who got his name butchered over the generations.
Stop by Saint Louis City Museum and I'll buy you some Schafley. Maybe we can even sit in the school bus that is on the roof.
I just ask one thing.
Can I touch your hair?
