By the way, a Nokia Lumia 520 Go phone occasionally goes on sale for less than $40, works well with TouchDevelop, and has a kids mode, allowing it to be locked down to appropriate apps.

So, I didn't take any of the wise advice from this thread. As cool as the Legos are, I went a different direction. Stacksocial ran a promo on an arduino board based robot kit:
