East Coast people! 11:27p TONIGHT Friday 06 September! NASA is launching the LADEE moon probe from the Wallops Island facility near Chincoteague, VA. Should be visible from the Carolinas to Maine and as far inland as Pittsburgh. So go outside and face the bottom third of the Delmarva Peninsula and hope for clear skies!

Dammit, I wish I could see in Atlanta.

I need to go to a launch one day.

Pretty sure I caught it up here in RI. It wasn't a plane and it was rising into the heavens slowly.

Sky was fairly clear here about 50 miles SSE of Pgh. Still saw nothing, lights from the plant probably had a lot to do with that.

Why are they launching from so far north?

They have to be giving up a good amount of free energy for getting into orbit.

I was wondering the same thing. The only thing I can figure is it was a PR move. More people up there to watch it.

Unfortunately I forgot about it and went to bed early.

We got a pretty good view considering it was the suburbs. Missed the first 5-10 seconds because of the horizon and a poorly-placed tree. But we saw most of the first stage, including a good size flame spread. We saw separation clearly, and a lot of the second stage before it was too far downrange to see any more. Overall, about 90 seconds in view.
