I've heard that while it's a great story and a good dark fun movie, it's doesn't have the vibe of other Star Wars flicks. It set out to be its own film, not one influenced by previous films.
"Friend" of mine from both high school and college is an arts reviewer for the New York Post. He was at an early viewing this week and said it is the best SW film since Return of the Jedi.
I think he thinks RoJ is the best of the series. I honestly couldn't tell you which ones I like and for what reasons, I just like the entire franchise other than the prequels which I haven't actually seen, so who knows what his opinion really means. He liked it though.

This is about the one from ANH, so we are still on 2. 3 if you count the ice planet thingy from TFA.
I'm mostly curious if it'll be appropriate for my 7yo soon to be 8yo son. I here the violence is a bit more real on this one. He loves all things star wars. I'd like to see it with him, but feel like I should have an advanced screening of it first.

Same here. It may be a case of me watching it first and then taking the kids later.

It really looks more like a Storm trooper edition, which is great if you are going to Cars and Coffee for the simple fact you aren't going to hit anything.
As for the actual movie, it's awesome, go see it. Without spoiling it, it's more of a straight-up war movie than the others, and it doesn't have as much fan service as TFA, which some found annoying. And the battle at the end is kick ass.

The violence isn't more graphic but it's more intense and plentiful. Some parts were reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan minus the gore. Also there are a lot of sad death scenes.

Wife saw it last night with our 8-year son. She said it sucked. He liked it.
