Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter dead at 96. I remember much gnashing of teeth at her lack of elegance when her husband was elected, but it would be hard to argue that her life was not the embodiment of grace and compassion. Personally, I prefer that to ballgowns.

I love their story as a couple - 77 years? RIP Mrs. Carter.
That's a bummer. But, very sadly, an eventuality.
RIP. I can't imagine what that must be like to loose your wife of 77 years.
Grace and compassion are the epitome of elegance. A life well lived,RIP.

She wore the same dress to Jimmy's presidential inauguration ball in 1976 that she had worn for his inauguration as governor in 1971. Just seems practical to me. I admired how humble they were, returning to their home town to live and then devoting their lives to charitable causes.
CNN has a pretty comprehensive biography of Rosalynn on their website: https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/19/politics/rosalynn-carter-mental-health-activist-humanitarian-and-former-first-lady-dies-at/index.html She was quite a lady.

I find it fascinating how long the Carters as a group have held on. Jimmy's still around, no? The man's like the terminator.
Rosalyn went into hospice just a few days ago. Jimmy has been in hospice for about a year. She was 96, he is 99.
I meant to start a thread on her passing as soon as I saw the news, but I got distracted by looking for some pictures that I had of them saved on my phone. Never did find the pictures. One of them was from their wedding day, one was them holding hands while walking in their neighborhood from a couple of years ago.
Thanks for posting this Marjorie.
She was a remarkable woman, remembered in news reports as an "activist" and "humanitarian", which is perhaps the highest praise a person can earn.

The Carter years were terrible as a presidency, but I have great respect for them as people.
My heart goes out to Jimmy Carter. He's lost his partner. I wish for him... whatever it is he needs. I know he's been in hospice. I doubt he's going to stick around much longer after this. I hope he is surrounded by love and family.
...
As far as the Carter presidency, my grandfather was serving the U.S. House of Representatives at the time. He said that Carter was probably the most intelligent man to hold that office in his lifetime, but that he wasn't a good politician. When dealing with congress, he'd act like he knew better than them, just because he did. Congressmen don't like someone telling them they're acting like idiots just because they're acting like idiots.
Americans moan a lot about how they want a president who will just be honest and frank with them. Turns out that's not true.
