Spinach should never be cooked. It turns, I tell you. Put it in a salad or on a sandwich and I'm game.
I generally agree but only because most people don't know how to cook it. I saute mine with butter and garlic. Even my greens hating dad like them.

Preach. Cooked spinach is gross, fresh spinach is fine.
Asparagus. I can't say I'm a fan. Fry it in butter and bacon grease, s&p, and I can tolerate it. I know it's good for me, but almost isn't worth it.
Saute it in olive oil with a little garlic salt, maybe some Mrs. Dash, and it's pretty good. Not my favorite, but decent.
And keep your vinegar based dressings. I'm not interested.
Again, preach. I'm just not a fan of vinegar as a flavor. Creamy dressings, please. Though Italian isn't too bad, probably because there's so much oil in it. If you add enough fat, anything tastes good.
I once attempted to grow microgreens. Unfortunately the batch got contaminated with sweetgum trees.

While I'm thinking of it, I like to spread my salad on top of a cooked potato, add the dressing, and mix it all up.
This sounds like a fantastic idea

TIL, half the people in this thread think mayo is spicy.
half of em were born above the mason dixon line. ( for the record, I was- and I am an acknowledged outlier, as I prefer my food to contain violence)
Salad preference? protein, green, go. I've gone almost completely dairy free- it's all been tasting spoiled to me for some reason so nuts to that. I prefer spring mix. My cats prefer spinach.
I think we currently have 30+ different hot sauces in the fridge. But I'm mostly giving some friendly ribbin' to the folks here.
Notice how there is no mention of pasta. Because pasta is not, and will never be salad. It's cold pasta. Its simply half-assed.
In reply to Appleseed :
You're wrong, pasta salad is delicious and is salad. It's actually honors salad by being included in the same category.
Geez, how long before this thread gets locked, I wonder.

extra-assed. They cook it, and cool it down.
Now the monsters that make that crunchy ramen abomination- lock em up.

I have that same salad spinner, made by Oxo. It's the Ferrari of salad spinners.
It's totally dumb, but I like to see how fast I can get it to spin. I can get that thing absolutely cranking! It even has a "brake" to slow it down if it gets out of control. Works really well!
Being married almost 37 years it's a great tool to spin like crazy and annoy the wife. If she complains I state how wonderful it is that I'm making us a salad for dinner.......we throw chicken or salmon on top - Italians dressing....

Love me a good pasta salad

One of em came from me!
I'm in the same boat. I like to give non-spice people E36 M3. I do it to swmbo all the time. She gets mad at me.
This is my preferred salad method though.
It's got all the ingredients, a green, onions, (optional) tomaters and fermented cucumbers, some cheese, a protein, fresh toasted croutons, and a dressing.
Not my picture.
On a more serious note, typical dinner sidesalad is fresh chopped romaine, diced onions, some cheese, diced peppers if I have them, and a little asiago Caesar dressing. Some Frenchs fried onions if I want a crunch.
On rare occasions I get a meal salad, it's usually the cob salad in a container from Sams Club. I like hard boiled egg, but I'm far too lazy to keep them on hand, despite my endless supply of eggs.
The best pasta salad I ever ate...was one I reheated in the oven.
I'm amazed at all the wrong opinions here. Romaine and spinach make excellent salads. Vinaigrettes are the superior dressing.
Have any of your crouton haters tried using those crunchy chow mein noodles to top your salads? They're delicious and only rarely stab the top of your mouth.
Can't wait for someone to pop in with some insane take like "jello salads are a reasonable thing to eat."

Jello with fruit and whipped cream? Delicious midwestern delight of my youth.
Jello with vegetables and mayonnaise? War crime.

I see you're also a man of culture.
All salads should include bacon.
Discuss.

Bacon is the easy button that cooks use to crutch themselves up. Myself included.

Romaine is about as far as I'm willing to go down the lettuce scale.
I prefer Iceberg, in spite of its negligible nutritional value. I'll take its fiber and water content, and just celebrate the pure joy of chewing.
Romaine is an acceptable second, but keep it simple; straight up on a sandwich, or a basic Cesar salad.
I love spinach, but not on in a salad. There is no satisfaction in its feeble excuse for a crunch. Steamed, creamed or even boiled, but never straight out of the ground.
Arugula, radicchio or any other baby greens? No thank you. No amount of feta cheese or bacon bits can make up for that kind of disappointment.
Yours is no doubt an unpopular opinion. However I agree 90%, I dont like spinach no matter what you do for it. But for a salad, iceberg if I can, romaine if iceberg isnt available, everything else is rabbit food.

Unpopular opinion- there are better cured pork meats than bacon.
