We only tend to use them for a very short period of time, so it's hard to discern. Also, since we're using the same air that we use to breathe, the bottles are filled with a very high quality compressor that filters out contaminants and controls the moisture content.
First you leave out the "underwater" in SCUBA, now you say this... are you an astronaut?

people use these kinds of breathing devices when they aren't underwater.. like when hazardous waste and things like that.. so the "U" can be left out in certain situations- like when one of the air tanks is strapped to a NASCAR crew member's back and only hooked up to an impact wrench...

Years ago the stock car crew I was working with (Street Stock at Dorsey Speedway in Elkridge Md) had a set up using a nitrogen tank that we would drag to the infield to change tires under green in case of a flat... It worked really well.

the better paintball feilds would use nitrogen... could get it at a higher PSI then the affordable scuba tanks so they would last longer... also it was cleaner and had less moisture in them (scuba tank just used compressed air)
