I'm finding a big problem with the search function here- when I do a search for something, generally I get 3 possibilities in every section. Which is fine.

But when I click on "More"- every time is says that nothing can be found. Which is a problem.

I'm looking for Keith's old throwback project Miata, so it's never going to be in the top 3- no matter what choice of words. And clicking "More" quickly ends that search.

Yeah it was given a big overhaul a few years ago...but honestly I still mostly use Google with "site:grassrootsmotorsports.com"

Here it is

1990 Mazda Miata custom commuter with a vintage flair

I found it by searching google with site:grassrootsmotorsports.com keith tanner vintage look miata porsche seats

The GRM search function has never worked well, despite revisions.

Oh wow, I didn't realize it was fixed up. I also just use google when I want to find something here that is not on the first page or two of the latest topics.

This. It's just easier and better. Not only that but you can restrict it to a certain board by changing the url inside the quotes.

So just out of curiosity, I searched for a Firefox add-on and found one! It's called "Search Site". It added an extra button in the search field built into Firefox and it uses google and the "site:...".

So to test it out: while already browsing GRM forum, I typed "porsche miata vintage keith" into the standard Firefox search box and hit the newly added green magnifying glass button and whammo! it brought me to this page.

Here's the link to the add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/search-site/

I'm not sure how it's easier to put that at the end of a google search vs. just doing the search on a specific site that has a search function.

All that does is make sure you focus on the search on this website. If the search worked properly here, it would be easier.

It's very hard to write a better search algorithm to run on your web server than one written by a megacorporation that specializes in search engines and has many data centers to run them on. I once wrote a very nice little search algorithm that had to be retired for the same reason.

And I've seen search functions on other sites that advertise the search is being run by google. So it's very possible to have the local search function run google just focusing on this site. You guys already know how to do that already- so it's feasible to incorporate that into this site's search.

When the search worked here, I had no issues with it- but it's only 50% again. It's not as if the search is through billions of pages. Maybe through a few thousand pages, and under 1 million posts.

Yeah it can be done and it's cheap. My DIY search engine was replaced by Google site search.

Normally it wouldn't be easier. But it's easier than using the search function built into this forum, which people have been complaining about and/or fighting with since the dawn of recorded history.

You didn't hear it from me, but the forum is getting a major facelift soon. I have seen the test site. Lots of neat stuff. But you totally didn't hear this from me.

Cue the obligatory complaining about how screwed up the last few site updates have been, which usually have a few good points peppered with lots of curmudgeonly (RIP) dislike of any changes whatsoever.

I for one continue to welcome our Grassroots Motorsports Overlords and may the Heavenly Cone Bless You.

Do we get to carry over the old post numbers, or do the ones who don't ask to carry over have to start over at 0?

(not that it really matters to me, but given that I started on this site in the late 90s, I have more than the posts indicated, but nowhere near the top. Crap, I just realized that I may be a 20 year member here. Holy cow)

Yes, you get to carry over your old post numbers. We're not starting from scratch, but Ed and our IT guys have been working on adding functionality plus an updated look.

You'll need to log in to post.
