I have a harbor freight engine hoist in my garage that leaked oil all over the floor and now doesn't raise up.

If possible, I'd like to try taking it apart, putting in new seals, and refilling it. I've never done anything like this, and don't know what tools I'll need, where to get new seals....what I should (or should not) do during this process....I'm not even sure how to tell when it is beyond being able to rebuild.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks.

You could just buy a new ram.

Like the Good Dr says...may just be cheaper to replace the HF ram.

Edit: correct link to correct ram

Yeah, except he doesn't need the flat bottom one, he needs the other one with the holes for the pin. You can also get one with air over hydraulics for like $79 or something, less coupon. It's what I use for my log splitter:

If it doesn't work, take it apart and see. You have nothing to lose; if you screw it up, hey - it didn't work anyway.

It may use simple easy to find and cheap o-rings. Or, it might require sacrificing an early VW Beetle to the great engine genie in the sky. Only one way to find out.

I just wanted to say "thanks". You guys are awesome. I used my 20% coupon for the ram you guys found....it only took a few minutes to change it out with the defective one, and now I'm able to use the crane again.

I still had time before sundown to pull the engine and tranny out of the '32 datsun frame. ;-)
