Who/what would be the best method to get a block from Australia to the U.S.?

Have it crated up safely after it's drained of all fluids and find a shipper that will put it into a container with other people's stuff as a partial load. It won't get here quick but it's most likely the most cost effective solution.

Unless the engine fills a whole container.

Sounds like a reasonable solution. Just have no idea on who ships stuff like that.

Phone Yellow Freight, or somebody like that. Say you have a crate that weighs 200 lbs, and whats the best way to get it from Oz to here. They be the professionals, and if they don't have an answer, they can likely tell you who you need to phone to get the answer.
