Thank you for that, I always wondered about the original Google translate was rudimentary in 2009 and my local hosts translated it as 'don't deface the wall' ...

That is actually a reasonable request. Tourist attractions in China will attract at least some people from rural areas. It is common in rural areas for children not to wear diapers, they just go where they are. In fact, when I visited the wall (over 10 years ago now) it was pretty common to see small children with pants that split down the back to allow for easy "exit".
Parts of China are quite advanced. Others... not so much.
